I am extremely disappointed in my experience with Bakfickan. I’d read about the restaurant before my trip, and I was really looking forward to eating here, as I love seafood and the restaurant’s reviews are great.
I was a solo diner, and I showed up right before a very bad rain and wind storm. The wait was nearly 1.5 hrs. After I had waited in the freezing cold rain and wind for about 30 minutes, a party of 2 showed up. A few minutes later, another party of 2 came along. Each party of 2 was seated within about 10 minutes of arrival, while I had to watch them eating for an additional 50 minutes in the cold rain. I wondered whether the hostess was waiting for a magical table with space for only 1 person to fall down from the heavens with my name written on it. But, after each of these couples had finished their main courses, I was finally seated in a table that previously sat a party of 2. Rather than 3 small parties each having a reasonable 40 minute wait to be seated, I had to wait a miserable 1.5 hrs, while 2 other parties had a short 10 minute wait.
Bakfickan: Please stop discriminating against solo diners. Travelling alone presents enough challenges already without also being punished by restaurants. Solo diners generally have to sit at a table for 2. I know it sucks to lose the extra revenue for the other seat, but we’re usually faster to finish a meal, so you can seat the next party sooner. You should seat all parties requiring the same size table in the order of arrival, rather than waiting for the restaurant to empty out before allowing...

We recently dined at Bakfickan, and I must say, it was an exceptional experience from start to finish. The restaurant is a true gem for seafood lovers, offering an variety of dishes that celebrate the freshness and natural flavors of the ocean.
The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with a view on st. Karin’s ruins.
The service was top-notch. The staff was attentive without being intrusive, ensuring that our glasses were always full and our needs met promptly.
The star of the show was, of course, the seafood. Every dish we ordered was cooked to perfection. The octopus was tender and flavorful. For the main course, we shared a dish of steamed mussels and crayfish, which was nothing short of spectacular. The mussels were plump and juicy, simmered in a rich, aromatic broth that was perfect for soaking up with crusty bread. The crayfish were succulent, with a delicate sweetness. The portions were generous, and the presentation was elegant without being pretentious.
The quality of the food and the overall dining experience make it well worth the cost.
If you're a fan of seafood, Bakfickan is a must-visit. Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or just in the mood for some fantastic fish, this restaurant delivers on all fronts. I'll definitely be returning to explore more...
Read moreMy wife and I visited Visby for a couple of days during a brief tour of Scandinavia. It was a wonderful visit overall but our meals at Bakficken were a particular highlight. We generally like to try different restaurants when we are travelling but the food at Bakficken was so good that we went back for a second night. On our first visit, we started with the smoked shrimp, toast, and aioli, which was terrific. Amy had the fish soup (not pictured, but also excellent) and I had a delicious plate of fried herring with spring onion butter on a bed of mashed potatoes accompanied by a jar of lingonberries. We had a late lunch the next day, so we limited ourselves to two mains for dinner: I had the pickled herring with caviar sauce and boiled potatoes and Amy had the seared char with boiled/browned carrots with butter, toasted buckwheat, and browned butter emulsion. The food was beautifully prepared and the sauces (especially the aioli) were outstanding. The restaurant is small, so make a reservation; the courteous staff will do their best to accommodate you. Very highly...
