A rare authentic Indian restaurant specializing in Kerala cuisine on the parched-for-authentic-Indian-food landscape of Stockholm.
Tawa fried pomfret ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Ordered Pomfret Pollichatu. But, they were out of banana leaves. So settled for tawa (pan) fried pomfret. Pomfret was fried to perfection. Lacked a bit of salt and the deep marination of typical Kerala style. But, I'm nitpicking here. The fried pomfret is served with plain white rice. Rice is usually served with curry dishes not with dry fried fish. So, inform them while ordering if you want to skip the rice.
Prawns Fry ⭐⭐⭐ Large tiger prawns were perfectly crispy. But, once again the batter lacked taste. Served with mayonnaise and tomato ketchup. Why? Where's the pudina chutney? 🤦🏻
Main course: Kozhi Chicken (Chicken Roast) with Malabar Parotta ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Chicken roast comes with rice. I skipped the rice and opted for Parotta. The gravy tasted and smelt great. Goes well with the parotta. Small portion size. They probably used chicken breast pieces which is the reason the chicken was hard. A chicken slow roast should have leg or thigh pieces for a soft chicken that almost melts into the gravy.
Service: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ They cook everything fresh and it's worth the wait. So, no complaints about the time it takes for your food to arrive. Crispy, delicious Kerala papad served with all dishes. Complimentary Kerala papad, pickle and rassam/Sambhar served while you wait for your food. 👌🏼 Very pleasant and cheerful staff!
Reserve your table as it's a small place and busy over the weekend.
Verdict: Reserved Overall this is a great start for Mahabelly in Stockholm. If they served the above dishes in India: ⭐⭐⭐ (needs improvement) In Stockholm: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 😁
I will go back several times to try everything from their extensive (and a little expensive) menu. Especially the traditional south Indian breakfast favorites: Idly, Medu Wada, Dosa, Uttapam, Filter Kaapi. The true test of a South Indian restaurant. 😀
I had a 'Maha' belly last night! Burp,...
Read moreSimply outstanding, I would rate this as the best Indian restaurant in sweden I ever had over these 3 years of my stay in sweden, one of our friend recommended this place to us, after they took the order, we were served with appalam and mango chutney - (mango chutney was amazing and it raised our expectations) parotta with kadala curry (to my surprise parotta was not a frozen one it had layers like we used to have in india), uthappam with three different curries (one sambar, one tomato chutney - it was top notch and one coconut chutney - even this was fresh) non veg thali (kerala matta rice with chicken (chicken was not rubbery and it was well cooked) and other curries was amazing too, they even gave extra bowl of matta rice with no extra charge, I am not that big fan of matta rice but this was amazing) finally a touch of Kerala nair chai (tastes exactly the same kind of tea you would drink in Kerala bakery) ambience was neat, it had pictures of different places in Kerala (I think they are the Kerala tourism ambassador in sweden :P). One funny incident - A Swedish person was having dosa with knife and fork, after finishing that dosa he said to the manager that it was good (I was surprised that they ate full dosa normally swedes don’t eat that much and I was thinking it would have tasted amazing when you had eaten with your hands instead of a fork and a knife) I would love to definitely visit Mahabelly again, and thanks to the friend who recommended this place to us, the person who managed the place when we were there was very sweet and always had a smile on his face - forget to ask his name my bad, from now we will recommend this restaurant to everyone in our circle, please don't stick to SSBhavan alone in stockholm instead try this place and thank me later. (Genuinely not a paid review), you may also write such a long review after treating your taste buds...
Read moreTerrible terrible experience this time.
We usually visit mahabelly like once a week. Mostly we have like chattihoru, porotta and non-veg curries.
Good things first, chicken fry felt above average. Liked how they served pappadam before the main food. Now onto the main things.
Porotta was so bad that it was burnt on top and the scales have become so hard, we were unable to eat. We called the gal who delivered the items, informed her this and told her if the cook available doesn't know how to make this, please provide us with an alternate bread. She came up with newly made ones which was not burnt but was not layery and was really hard indicating how the person making porottas either was not interested OR was not the same person.
Chicken curry was so lifeless that I dont want to mention it.
My friend who has been an ardent fan of their fish chattichoru stopped having the food around half-point and said it tastes like old-choru with a lot of water in it. Things didn't end there and after coming home she had a stomach issue and diarrhoea. She was really sad that she had lost the trust in one of her favourite restaurants and was afraid to go back anymore.
When paying the bill, I asked the gal like why suddenly the food has become terrible. With this high of cost, how can they even think of giving us such low quality food. She apologised and told us that their main chef was not well & all this happened. I don't know whether to believe her/ whether she was giving an excuse. She could have told us this in the beginning(the limitations) and we would have ordered accordingly.
Now I don't know when i will gather the courage to visit...
