We visited "roots" for the first time for my husband's birthday, midweek, and chose the 6-course option and the accompanying "Wine Journey" (with non-alcoholic options for non-drinkers or those expecting).
From the Japanese flavours of the kitchen's amuse-bouche "Hello" to the additional birthday helping of the sweet "Goodbye", this meal was a delight. Flavours ranged from delicate and subtle to rich and rounded, with dishes representing all options: fish, meat, dairy and vegetable. The classic "roots" plate of seasonal vegetables was outstanding, and the fun of guessing each component definitely enhanced the experience!
The "Wine Journey" was an excellent match for each dish presented and the non-alcoholic options were so good that they will definitely be making an appearance in our fridge at home. I highly recommend choosing this option. (I can also say that after just spending a week in Sardinia, the coffee served to conclude the evening was one of the best I've ever tasted!)
The restaurant atmosphere is calm, elegant and comfortable, with a scenic vista of the Rhein at night. The serving staff were attentive, polite and knowledgeable, and the handwritten welcome card was a truly heartwarming touch that I will gladly keep as a memento of a wonderful evening.
Bravo to the chefs for their excellent work (and thank again you for the second round of delicious sweet treats!) – we will most definitely be visiting again with family and...
Read moreDisappointing birthday dinner experience at this Michelin star restaurant.
6 course surprising menu is ok/good. River view is nice. But surprisingly, nothing special from the restaurant at all for a birthday celebration dinner despite that we let the restaurant know earlier. No little birthday cake, no complementary desert, nothing! We even asked the restaurant after the dinner for a little cake and the answer was still no. It is the first time we experienced that there is nothing special for a birthday dinner in a Michelin restaurant and we still cannot believe it.
OK/good food, disappointing service and just a nice river view - made me wonder what made this restaurant a two star.
(React to the owner’s response below): this one line of ‘regret’ and eight lines of ‘however’ tells everything about what kind of service and experience can...
Read moreHad 8 courses of enjoyable dishes.
I found the dishes to broadly be of two types - First, innovative ingredient combinations that turn out surprisingly pleasant (for example a broccoli sorbet) and memorable but not “life changing”, and second, relatively classic flavor combinations that really score high on the deliciousness scale (for eg the lamb with a very intense jus, that I’d happily order a very large portion of on any given day).
I was not a huge fan of the service. Took 4 hours to go through 8 courses. I get the whole slow food thing but I really did not enjoy the long periods of time spent sitting around and nursing my drinks between courses, as fond as I am of my company...
