If you're ever in Basel, Switzerland, a visit to the local zoo is an absolute must! I recently had the pleasure of exploring the Basel Zoo, and I couldn't be happier with my experience. One of the first things that struck me about the zoo was how nice and open it felt. The spacious layout allowed for plenty of room to move around and enjoy the different exhibits without feeling crowded. The pathways were well-maintained and easy to navigate, making my stroll through the zoo a pleasant and enjoyable one. The variety of animals at the Basel Zoo was truly impressive. From majestic big cats like lions and tigers to playful primates like monkeys and lemurs, there was something for everyone to see and appreciate. I was especially thrilled to see some rare and exotic species that I hadn't encountered in other zoos before, such as red pandas and snow leopards. The zoo's commitment to conservation and biodiversity was evident in the wide range of animals they had on display, and it was heartwarming to see their dedication to preserving endangered species. The vivarium, a highlight of the zoo, was beautifully done. The lush greenery and carefully designed habitats created a natural and immersive experience for the visitors. I was able to observe various reptiles, amphibians, and insects up close, and it was truly fascinating to learn about their unique characteristics and behaviors. The attention to detail in the vivarium was evident, and it added an educational element to my visit. The zoo's restaurant also had a dedicated kids corner, which was a thoughtful touch. It was a perfect spot for young children to take a break, enjoy some kid-friendly meals, and have some fun with interactive activities. It was evident that the zoo made an effort to cater to families and create a welcoming environment for visitors of all ages. Overall, my experience at the Basel Zoo was fantastic. The nice and open layout, the good view on the animals, the variety of species, the beautifully designed vivarium, and the kids corner in the zoo restaurant all contributed to a memorable visit. I highly recommend a trip to the Basel Zoo if you're ever in the area – it's a must-see destination for animal lovers, nature enthusiasts, and families alike.

Absolutely loved it. We went as a family of three, we were given a code from the hotel we are staying in which gets you 50% off many attractions and the zoo was one of them. With the discount it cost the equivalent of £23. I didn't expect it to be a whole lot different to some of the zoos at home and thought it make take us a couple of hours but I was wrong, there was so much to see and do we were there over four and a half hours. There were seperate experiences such as walking lamas or ponies through the park, we saw some children doing this. I'm often sceptical about the wellbeing of zoo animals and there were a couple of enosures that didn't seem big enough but for the main part we were really impressed. There is ongoing improvements going on too. Overall this was a great day out and a bargain if you use the 50% discount code provided to all visitors who stay in Basel.

We were visiting Basel and really only went to the zoo as a bit of a change to the normal tourist stuff. This place is really worth a visit. Not only is it a delightful little haven in the midst of a fairly big city, it is just really lovely. The aquarium and the primate houses are both huge. As usual in Switzerland, every glass surface is immaculately clean and the enclosures are intelligently and artistically designed. Great for taking photos and video. Staff were all very courteous and the entire place really well laid out and signposted. Plenty of nice clean toilets and sensibly priced food and drinks. The crew who run this place deserve praise for developing and maintaining such a lovely site, both for the local parents and visitors. Quite unexpectedly, one of our favourite Basel destinations.

While Basel Zoo claims to adhere to state regulations for animal welfare, and likely does, many of the enclosures appear uncomfortably small. This concern might be more appropriately addressed at a state level, but I believe the zoo could take further steps to enhance the habitats. The constrained urban location of the zoo undoubtedly limits space, but this could have been mitigated either by building the zoo outside the city (like Givskud Zoo in Denmark) or by housing fewer animals to ensure better welfare. Thankfully, there were no immediate signs of distress or poor health in the animals we observed, which is a positive note. However, there is certainly room for improvement in how they manage animal welfare and enclosure sizes.

Like every human I have my moral doubts about the idea of putting animals into cages, in countries they aren't used to be. However this isn't the place to discuss this matter. I hadn't been to a zoo in quite some time, so I found myself filled with quite some joy, when I entered the "Basel Zoo". I started with the "aquarium" section, filled with beautiful fish and transforming into terrariums filled with snakes and alikes. I can only recommend to start the walk through the Zoo like this. Also bring some time if you want to see the whole Zoo! It is quite big, and I might have gotten lost once or twice (little thing they could to better, the signs. It was a little hard to know directions in there)
