The hotel is in a perfect location on a small peninsula below the main town of Spiez, overlooking Lake Thun in most directions. Getting there by car was confusing – more explicit driving instructions for those unable to understand German road signs would be helpful, particularly those appearing to prohibit cars from the only road to the hotel! Possibly because of it being late September, the exterior of the hotel appeared to be a dumping ground for tables, sun loungers and other items. The door to reception is big and blank, looking like a staff entrance rather than the main entrance to the hotel – we walked all the way round the hotel and restaurant until we realised it was the way in! Out of working hours, the door is locked (residents have a key) but there was no sign advising late arrivals to go round to the restaurant for access. However, do not be put off by these quibbles. Once inside, all is different! We had an excellent welcome from reception, an offer of help with our bags, and guidance on a place to park. Our room was a ‘small double’ but there was plenty of space for us (although it wasn’t easy to find somewhere to stow the enormous cushions on the bed). The facilities were good: bright bedside lights, TV, hair drier, kettle with tea (but no milk or coffee), and a safe. We had a good, versatile shower, plenty of toiletries and towels were changed daily. And of course we had a wonderful view of the lake, even while lazing in bed. Breakfast was outstanding: cereals, juice, fruit, cheese, ham, salmon, boiled eggs, bread, pastries, jams, tea and coffee. The hotel is really a restaurant with rooms, with the owners specialising in a high standard of classic Italian food. Food was expensive, although not by Swiss standards, and it wasn’t always easy to find a simple evening meal on the menu apart from pizzas (which were excellent, cooked in the traditional Neapolitan way in a wood-fired oven). The hotel is a good base from which to explore a delightful area and we very much...

Nestled on the picturesque waterfront of Spiez, Switzerland, Riviera by Elio is more than just a restaurant; it's an experience. From the moment you step onto the terrace, overlooking the shimmering waters of Lake Thun and the majestic Swiss Alps, you're transported to a world of refined elegance and culinary delights.
I opted for the tasting menu, which was a culinary journey through the finest flavour of the region. Each dish, beautifully presented and bursting with flavour, was a testament to the chef's artistry. The scallops with truffle oil were a symphony of textures and tastes, while the lamb with rosemary just melted in our mouths.
The service at Riviera by Elio is as impeccable as the food. The waiter was attentive but not intrusive, ensuring that every need was met with a smile. The wine list, boasting an impressive selection of regional and international wines, perfectly complemented our meal.
But the true highlight of the evening was the ambience. The soft lighting, gentle music, and mesmerizing view of the lake created an atmosphere of pure tranquillity and sophistication. Whether you're enjoying a romantic dinner for two or celebrating a special occasion, Riviera by Elio provides the perfect setting.
While the experience at Riviera by Elio comes with a price tag, it's an investment in a truly unforgettable evening. The combination of exquisite cuisine, impeccable service, and jaw-dropping views makes it a culinary gem that deserves to be experienced. I left feeling pampered, satiated, and with a renewed appreciation for the beauty of Switzerland.
