The atmosphere at Mazi is undeniably lovely. Outdoor seating is spacious and well-arranged, making it a great spot to enjoy a relaxed meal. The menu is decently sized, offering a variety of starters and mains, and there’s also the option to combine several starters for a mezze-style experience.
We started with the eggplant dip and pita, followed by the chicken starter and grilled octopus main. All dishes were flavorful and well-prepared, though definitely on the pricier side. However, the overall dining experience was overshadowed by disappointing service.
Despite the restaurant not being overly busy, we waited over an hour for our food. The pita served with the eggplant was disappointingly small — just four tiny slivers — which felt unnecessarily stingy, especially considering the price.
As someone with a severe lactose intolerance, I made a point to ask about dairy in the grilled octopus dish. I was told the fava bean spread contained lactose, so I asked if it could be substituted with something else — but no accommodation was offered. When the dish arrived, I tasted the onion sauce and had to double-check again; only then did the staff confirm it was made with butter. In the end, I could only eat the octopus itself, without any of the accompaniments.
When dining out with dietary restrictions, I expect the staff to be fully informed about the ingredients and to take those needs seriously. A small gesture, like offering a substitute or even comping a drink for the oversight, would have gone a long way — but unfortunately, nothing was done.
Mazi has potential, with great food and a beautiful setting, but until the service improves — especially when it comes to attentiveness and accommodating dietary needs — it’s hard to recommend...
Read moreThis restaurant has a great atmosphere and service but unfortunately the food did not fully live up to our expectations - especially for the hefty price.
Starting off with the Haloumi fries that were a major letdown, as they lacked the desired crispy texture. Instead they were soft and didn’t have the crunch you’d expect (possibly it could have also been a bad batch).
The biggest disappointment however was the Gyros. Though we really liked the meat & sauces that accompanied the dish, our main concern was the bread. Four little triangles of pita bread (see pictures) is not enough for two people and definitely not what you can expect for 36 Francs! We had to order a second batch which we got charged extra for - something we felt unnecessary given the already steep price.
On a positive note, the ambiance felt inviting and we enjoyed the cozy and warm interior. Staff was very friendly from the get go and tried their best, though there was a minor hick-up in forgetting our bread but things like those can happen. Furthermore, the pumpkin and Skioufichta were enjoyable. In my opinion, the pasta could have been a bit firmer and chewier, as traditional Skioufichta typically have more bite. However, this could also partially be due to preferences of the swiss locals, as they like their pasta slightly softer and soggy.
Overall this restaurant serves authentic greek cuisine but definitely does not come in cheap! Maybe they just had a bad day, therefore i’d consider coming back to reassess my experience and see if anything...
Read moreDuring a recent visit to Zurich, I had the pleasure of dining at MAZI im Morgarten, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of my trip. From the moment I walked in, I was struck by the warm and inviting atmosphere. The staff was genuinely friendly and attentive, making me feel welcome right away.
The food, though, is what truly stole the show. Every dish was a perfect balance of flavors, prepared with obvious care and high-quality ingredients. The creativity in the menu was impressive, and I appreciated the thoughtful touches in both presentation and taste.
I have to give special mention to the lahanodolmades, which were tender and flavorful, the galaktoboureko, which was perfectly creamy with just the right amount of sweetness, and the giaourtlou kebab, a hearty and satisfying dish that was bursting with authentic flavors. Each bite was a testament to the passion and skill of the kitchen team.
MAZI im Morgarten is a place where you can sense the love behind every detail, from the decor to the service to the food itself. If you’re in Zurich and looking for a restaurant that delivers an exceptional dining experience, I can’t recommend it highly enough. I’ll definitely be returning on my next visit...
