I visited On Tap last night to watch the AU-NZ Rugby League game with a local friend from Hungary as well as a local Taiwanese colleague.
This is my first review of On Tap, but I have been here many times since my first visit last December. I will admit it is now my favorite pub in all of Taipei.
I would have given them 5 stars but I have had issues with the taste of their hamburgers, music level noise and level of service on a few occasions. Enough events not worthy of 5 stars. However, consider me picky and selfish with five star ratings.
On Tap seems well managed and staffed to the point of being able to handle the large two stories of crowds that show up there all week. This is not your usual quiet Pub.. This place has a very positive buzz to it and therefore it can become quite loud with everyone talking and such. All nationalities are there, including many locals.
Well placed TVs and big screens both on the main floor and the basement attract sports fans from all over. The seating is arranged to always be facing the screens.
Getting here is easy as a few blocks from the Dunhua blue line station. Remember Exit 3. Only a block off the main road.
While not a craft beer haven, it has many craft beers to offer. They have a huge choice of bottled and tap local and craft beers. I especially enjoy their Redpoint Tai P.A. pints on tap. I tried their new offering - Redpoint Disco Macaw - last night. Wow! Imagine an IPA combined with juicy pale ale. Oh so tasty! Pricey ($270 NT), but a great value. I ended up having 3 pints...tough life...
Overall, they are a 4.5 on my scale. The wait staff now recognizes me and almost knows me by name, they for sure know my eating and beer idiosyncrasies.
Until they screw up, this will continue to be my favorite pub and craft beer joint in all of Taipei. Cheers to On Tap for a job...
Read moreI thought this would be a "friendly pub", turns out that neither part was correct.
After being taken by the wife for a day of shopping, I was looking forward to a casual pint in a brit style pub.
I should have realised something was wrong when it was the only venue on the street that had no customers in it on a Friday evening. The waitress came to us and said that there was a minimum cover charge of 500ntd each. After explaining that I had come in for a relaxing pint and that my pregnant wife was not able to drink, the waitress said that we could stay in "on tap" for one pint only. It seemed a bit unfriendly to impose a 500ntd cover charge limit when the bar had no other customers, but i was happy for the one pint.
The drink arrived 10 minutes after I ordered it, and it seems that the drink was different to what I had asked for. they tried to insist that I had asked for the drink that they had given me and that i should accept the drink, but we but we iniststed otherwise. They did provide me eventually with the drink that I had asked for, but also insisted that we pay the 500ntd cover charge.
After the slow service, wrong drink, and them wanting us to pay a cover charge in an empty bar, i was glad to walk out of "on tap" and will never return again.
I can understand that a cover charge makes good business sense when there are not many available tables in a bar or cafe, but in an empty bar their insistance on cover charges just seemed so money grabbing that i no longer felt relaxed...
Read moreLike the atmosphere but BIG NO for the service. Many times they will ask u to not talk loudly outside the bar (need to be very silent) bcs there is citizen houses. Can u imagine... go to bar but need to be silent outside the bar. Its normal to have an entrance fee for watching fifa world cup but they asked 2x400nt per person to watch 2 games. I think thats crazy... after complaining, we could go inside only paid 400 (got 2 drinks) per person. My friend came after me but they didnt let him go inside bcs they said too crowded inside and need to wait until the first match finished but the fact was still enough empty space inside. Even we complaining, THEY DIDNT CARE. So we need to wait my friend inside for around 20 minutes. They are really strict with the rule n dont care about the cust. The price for a big glass of draftbeer is 190nt. Thats a normal price for a draft beer at a bar but the beer so bad, only feel little bit cold but the food was ok. NOTE: if u guys wanna have fun drink some alcohol just DONT GO THERE bcs u will have not a good mood...
