Shun Chen Bakery — Restaurant in Da'an District

I have gone here to buy some sweets but I have had mild to severe allergic reactions because nobody knows the ingredients of the food except for the chef which is available in the morning only (they don't write down all the ingredients of their food while others do)! And they are even really expensive!

So let's tell my story of purchasing: I have an allergy to kiwifruit.

They don't write down all the ingredients they use in their sweets although all the other bakeries do. But only if they use mango or peanuts.

Basically i asked if there was kiwifruit in the sweets and said I was allergic to it and they said no.

After the first bite of the coconut tart I got allergic and couldn't breathe well for two days in a row exactly during weekend and I had to use several different medications to heal my allergy and I even couldn't go out of home since how I felt.

I asked for a refund of the price I paid plus a few money for medicines I had spent (I didn't ask for damages...). They gave me but asked me to return the not eaten sweets. Which I did.

Useless to say I have sent an email to their email asking for a refund of the damage and of the visit to the doctor and medical test and asking them to starting writing down all the ingredients they use in their sweets. Will update this review if I get a reply (if I don't get, then this will be the final review).

Although they said they prepare cakes aside, so kiwifruit was used in another part, I believe they do not follow proper hygienic measures to prevent cross-contact and most of all they may cause life-threatening allergies since the staff who serves the food does not know about the ingredients of the food since only the chef which is available only at the morning knows the ingredients.

They have been lucky to have had a kind remind from me before anything more serious could happen.

Pastries are displayed for you to pick up with tongs and placed on the tray. However, their stacked trays have no paper liner, so it was dirty, and we dare not put fresh pastries on the dirty trays without a liner.

Trays are dirty because after each use, they are re-stacked. Thus, whatever was beneath the old trays, are now on the surface of ALL the trays.

We saw plastic containers by the cooked meat section. We used that for our pastries instead. This was a compromise.

Many of their pastries have pork inside, so be selective. I don't eat pork and avoid it, so my choices are limited. No English words are available, which made it a challenge. This is where Google came in to assist me. Warning, though, even after Google translation, it still didn't make any sense. For example, what is a mud cake?

Overall, it's an ok pastry shop, but certainly...

The smell of fresh baked goods made me stop inside the store.

They have a lot of different sweet and savory breads available.

The breads were soft to the touch and freshly baked as I see the staff packing the baked goods from the tray into packages.

We tried the mochi which were ok. The mochi skin was soft but I've had softer. But it did have lots of filling.

The red bean bread was OK as well. Soft and full of red bean filling.
