The dining experience at Toh-A' is overwhelmingly beautiful. It is a sumptuous meal and art at the same time.
The restaurant's interior design is one coherent piece of art, with a recurring theme of nature. The center piece are a row of stylized cages made of stunning red metal rods in which romantic yet also stylized tree branches with individual silver leaves symbolising flowers are kept, the cages undulating like a row of wild bushes. The dividers between the spacious tables and a three-dimensional "painting" of numerous wooden chips play a recurring wooden theme that is mirrored by the tiles of the unusual bathroom.
The menu consists of a single set menu with choices for the soup and mains. Each course sparkles with flavours as much as with a creative presentation that, highly unusual, mirrors the interior design, with one course taking up the Zen garden and tree branch theme of the table decoration while the soufflé is presented on tray adorned by another large branch with blossoms.
All this - as well as the dreamy, eclectic background music featuring the likes of Klezmer music - doesn't distract but merely adds to the food itself. The compositions are creative yet rounded and deeply convincing, evoking the voice of authentic, bold ingredients rich in umami. A fusion of Western and Asian flavors, presented in a colourful serious of small portions. The foie gras mousse pairs beautifully with a rice cake, porcini and ibérico ham give incredible depth to a Chinese chicken soup, the classic French soufflé has a gentle green shade of fragrant matcha.
I left enchanted, happy, and surprised that this gem doesn't feature any...
Read moreWe brought visitors from out of town and they absolutely enjoy the food and environment of the restaurant. The only reason the service star is so low is because of one man, one person who I assume was the manager.
Pros: beautiful interior and decor. Really impressed our guests beautiful dishes and layout from beginning yo end. We especially loved the foie gras on thé taro. all the female staff were courteous and tried to explain each dish as much as possible. Also helped warned which plates were extremely hot. great CP level of cost to quality of food. Extremely well priced and extremely delicious Hidden dessert (soufflé) is a nice element, remember to pre-order this off menu secret!
Cons: the supposed tall man with glasses and white gloves, whom I assumed was the manager is terrible. Poor attitude, poor service. Has his nose up in the air as if he is too good for service. Barely explained the dishes in detail (huge contrast to other servers) and when he was taking away the big meat knives, he wasn’t even aware that he swung the sharp end so close to our faces. I watched in horror as it was very close to our guests faces. Even others at the table noticed. Would have had higher expectations for this so called manager. If you are unlucky to have him serve your table, best call on the others to help. lobster noodle bisque was delicious but extremely heavy especially with the noodles. Unfortunately bc of this dish we could barely finish our entrees. Wish it had been less heavy despite...
Read moreWe ate dinner there on Friday, October 18, 2024.
First off, the place is beautiful. The entry is elegant and interesting (and I’m sure instagram worthy). The room is dark and elegant and full of beautiful and artful floral arrangements. From the photos I’d seen in advance, I didn’t expect it to be so beautiful
We were sat promptly on arrival by the manager (an elegant gentleman we later learned is named Frank). Introduced by o the menu (in Mandarin and English on opposite sides of a hand-held fan).
The experience is a multi-course tasting menu. We enjoyed the various courses very much. They were beautiful, well composed and delicious. The one minor exception was the soufflé which is an orange/Grand Marnier soufflé that is far to eggy and way too mild on orange over (having made these at home it seemed rather undercooked)
Frank also had excellent knowledge of the wine list and guided us to a very nice Italian red that paired well with the many courses
Overall, the service was excellent. The courses arrived on a good pace. Service was quiet and discrete, thorough, without being overwhelming
I highly...
