During a business trip, friends suggested I visit Volando Urai Spring Spa & Resort in Wulai, New Taipei City, and I'm so glad I took their advice. Although I didn't stay at this incredible hotel, which borders Fushan, Neidong Forest Park, and Lansheng Bridge, I did have time to unwind and take a leisurely stroll around the resort and its surroundings, culminating in a mesmerizing and peaceful meditative performance - a silent chess game.

My friends recommend Volando Urai Spring Spa & Resort as the premier choice for a relaxing getaway, featuring elegantly appointed rooms, hot springs, aromatherapy spa, and two outstanding restaurants. With its prestigious REALIS&CHATEAUX membership since 2013.

Just a short drive from Taipei, Volando Urai Spring Spa & Resort offers a transformative escape into a world of breathtaking natural beauty. Perched on the mountainside, the resort provides awe-inspiring views of the surrounding forests and crystalline river waters, inviting guests to reconnect with the natural world. With its innovative blend of Taiwanese aboriginal traditions and indigenous design elements, the resort creates a truly immersive experience, from the private bathhouses where guests can rejuvenate in the spring waters to the breathtaking serene river views that soothe the soul.

The silent chess game begins: man and woman, exuding calm and confidence, sit in the lotus position, floating on the water. Their eyes closed, they face each other, surrounded by the soothing sounds of the Urai waters. The water's surface reflects their serenity, creating a stunning visual symmetry. As the turbulent waters descend from the Wulai District mountains, the performers remain steadfast, a powerful reminder of the human capacity for balance and resilience. That’s superbly impressive and amazing.

With a contemplative movement, the man's arms unfold, harmonizing with the universe's rhythms. The bowls' crystalline tones reverberate, merge, and finally evaporate, distilling the essence of the present moment. The man's music becomes a powerful reminder of the transformative potential inherent in each moment. As the last notes dissipate, the woman commences, her touch sparking a fresh, vibrant sound that encapsulates the promise of new beginnings and renewal.

In this serene atmosphere, the man and woman form a profound bond, their silent chess game reflecting their deep mutual understanding. As drums, gongs, and the gentle sounds of a flowing river and breeze intertwined, the performance became a powerful catalyst for inner peace, promoting a profound sense of calm and connection among all who inhabited the land.

Observing a silent chess game performance offers me a unique opportunity for introspection and self-discovery, leading to a profound sense of calm and clarity.

Wulai is a hidden gem that offers a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. By exploring its lush mountain landscapes, taking a scenic train ride to Wulai Waterfall, and delving into the Indigenous Atayal culture at the Wulai Forestry Living Museum, visitors can rejuvenate their spirits and forge a deeper connection...

The negatives: Food & beverage was definitely not Relais & Chateaux level. It was good, but not at the price point this hotel charges for room & board. I also got severe food poisoning from the restaurant (I am almost certain it was the food here as it was the only place I ate for 24 hours prior to getting violently ill and nearly having to cancel my flight home.) -Only one restaurant staff person spoke English. One night I was provided with a menu in English so I at least knew what I was eating, but the second night I had no menu, nobody to communicate with, and no idea what was on my plate for 7+ courses. -Hospitality/service was also not what I would have expected for this expensive of a property. I walked around confused half of the time not knowing how to access the spa or onsen areas, or why there was a random lady with a singing bowl outside of my room, etc. Some of that is language barrier (I don't speak any Chinese, so that's on me). I also asked about local activities and hikes and was provided with a basic map and that's all. If you plan to do any activities in the area, you need to research and figure that out fully before you come.

The positives: -The view for the river facing rooms is really beautiful and peaceful. -The spa services I did (massage and facial) were really fantastic and the spa treatment rooms are lovely. And at least compared to the USA, treatments were very affordable. -The public onsen facilities were great and, at least on my weekday stay, never crowded. There was an outdoor pool, two cold plunge pools, steam sauna, dry sauna, and two indoor hot pools, including one with jets. -The female server in the breakfast restaurant (I am forgetting her name) is really friendly and helpful. And I appreciated the welcome from Kobe at the front desk. -Bed was very comfortable. -Getting here from Taipei city was really easy, and I appreciated having the shuttle bus option.

I would not stay again but would consider a day visit just for the fantastic spa and...

A Perfect Girlfriends’ Getaway at Volando Urai:

Volando Urai Spring Spa & Resort is an excellent spot for a girlfriends’ reunion! From the moment we arrived, we were captivated by the beautiful natural scenery, artistic atmosphere, and warm hospitality. The manager and staff were attentive and thoughtful, introducing us to the afternoon tea and zen time, and confirming our spa and dinner reservations.

Our room was spotless and stylish, with breathtaking views of the river and mountains. Both the private hot spring bath and the public outdoor bath were pure bliss — peaceful, rejuvenating, and the perfect way to unwind while soaking in the serene natural surroundings.

The afternoon tea, paired with a cultural drum and vocal performance, was a delightful and memorable experience, followed by a deeply relaxing spa session in a spacious private room that felt soothing and zen.

Dinner and breakfast were both exceptional, featuring fresh local ingredients and elegant presentation. Also, the chef prepared gluten-free meals for my friend — each dish was thoughtful, flavorful, and beautifully served.

What truly sets Volando Urai apart is its attention to detail and dedication to creating a holistic, rejuvenating experience. Every element — from the design to the calming aromas — promotes peace and relaxation.

We left feeling refreshed and inspired, and after sharing our photos, our other girlfriends are already asking to join us next time! Highly recommend this resort for anyone seeking a luxurious, calming escape in nature. We also learned that each Volando Resort has its own unique theme — now we can’t decide whether to return to Urai or explore another...

We splurged on Volando during our trip to Taiwan because of the great reviews, but unfortunately I got horrible food poisoning from dinner on the second night. That said, the resort itself is very beautiful, and the staff are all so kind. The woman at the front desk even took me to 7-11 next door to help me buy an HSR ticket. Food poisoning aside, the food was okay. A few dishes were good, most were fine or not good, and I didn’t eat anything after getting sick. We also spent extra for the grand view room (which was beautiful), but we couldn’t even really use the private bath with the blinds open because it the bath and shower directly faced one of the resort’s restaurants and a space where they held performances. A sign said the windows were tinted, but when we were in the restaurant we could see right into our room.

It was one of the best experience I had here while visiting Taiwan. I was not sure which Hotspring should I go for as there are multiple to choose from. Urai came into my list top, and it did not disappoint. Special appreciation to both Angel & Kuan Yu for making the whole experience here memorable one. The room is neat, clean & cozy. I would highly recommend the Grandview Bathhouse as it’s a private room with a scenic view. To get here is quite simple, just take the green line all the way to Xindian (last stop), and there’s a shuttle bus from the station to get here. Will be back again for sure !
