Background info: This place is part of the "Asoke Buddhist Group" in Thailand. (You may tell the difference as their monks wear BROWN instead of gold/orange and their students and workers wear the BLUE uniforms.) There are currently 9 "asoke villages" nationwide, with the one in Bangkok called Santi Asoke. Monks, nuns and villagers grow their own foods in a way that is similar to permaculture. After self-sufficiency, they outreach to serve foods at very cheap price (and some of the foods, especially those uncooked take-away vegetables, are organically grown by themselves yet even cheaper than those in a conventional market!). They also have minimart/stores, like this one behind the coupon counter, selling their village-made products (medicine, shampoos, enzymes, etc.) and also outside vegan products at unbelievably cheap price too (You may tell from the price tag: The upper number is the cost, and the lower number is the selling price). Normally each city only has 1 or 2 "Asoke" restaurants and stores, with one in front of the village and the other relatively near the city center. Anyone who is interested to know more can search "Santi Asoke" in google map (already the most accessible one, near Nawamin Road). But frankly I prefer other asoke villages as they are in more rural areas. The villages normally have their own schools, medical centre, rice factories, etc. so basically they are well like a society beyond the society. Villagers, consisting of farmers, engineers, doctors, scientists, students, schoolteachers etc., don't trade with each other but cooperate in daily life. Everyone is fairly treated regardless of their...
Read moreI went to Chamlong Asoka vegetarian today and the except for the very kind lady at the coupon booth, the staff were very unfriendly. Some refused to give me the dishes saying that they were out, even though I could see the food right in front of my eyes, and other Thai customers got it. One male staff eventually packed me some white mushrooms (he said it was out earlier too) after a Thai lady ordered the same thing. He then handed it to me without giving the soup base, while charged me the same price as the other customer (she got the soup base and everything). I don’t care about the price, just want to point out the discrimination. And still don’t understand why :). The customer was so kind that she even gave me her package of mushroom and the soup. Very nice gesture and generous of her. It turned out the staff’s rudeness was a blessing in disguise. I have had diarrhea since then and did not eat dinner. Still in bed expecting to run to the toilet a few...
Read moreThis is an amazing vegetarian market! There are about ten different food vendors with different styles. Almost all of the patrons are Thai, and I didn't realize that there were that many vegetarians in Thailand. It's a small market, but it has a ton of options. It's a little hard to find, because it's in the back side of a bigger building. I really like the beef and mushroom satay. I also love the different vegetarian soups. There's a vendor who makes deliciously spicy fruit papaya salad, which is an awesome mix of flavors. All the people are very friendly. Get there very early, because most vendors start packing up about an hour...
