Ton Payom Congee – Famous, but with Some Drawbacks 🍲
Ton Payom Congee is a well-known breakfast spot in Chiang Mai, so I decided to give it a try around 7:30 AM on a Wednesday. Unfortunately, finding parking near the shop was quite difficult, and to make matters worse, the opposite side of the street had a no-parking sign that day. I ended up parking along the canal and walking a fair distance.
I ordered their pork congee with egg (฿50). The taste was rather bland, likely because they don’t use MSG, which is great for health-conscious diners, but it does mean you’ll have to season it to your liking at the table.
The patongko with pandan custard (฿30) was crispy and the custard was pleasantly sweet — a nice side dish. However, I was surprised that a 600 ml bottle of Singha water without ice cost ฿15, which seems a bit overpriced compared to the usual ฿10 standard at most local places.
One major downside was that the restaurant sets up tables on the sidewalk, leaving almost no room for pedestrians to pass. It felt like the space was being taken advantage of, and I hope the restaurant considers making improvements in this area for the sake of the community.
Overall, it’s a decent place for early risers who want classic Thai congee, but be prepared for the...
Read moreUsually, I do not make a review about places that i visit, but i want to write something on this shop. I do not recommend this restaurant if you are two. When i got to this restaurant, there was only connected two tables for a large group. But the fat lady owner with black beret did not allow us to get the seats and made us stand for minutes till a table-for-2 is available. I've been to lots of restaurants in Thailand for years, but i have never been treated like that. Her prior interest is only for maximizing food sales, not for customer hospitality. She ruined my morning mood on the last day of 2023. Never visit again for the...
Read moreVery quick service breakfast/branch localized restaurant. Despite long queu the staffs are very polite and accommodating to the customer. They will inform us how to order, what's their special of the day and what's run out. The owner told me that the restaurant actually opened at 5am till about noon, but best to come at 6am, when the restaurant is fully open and operating. Great place to try out once you arrived in Chiangmai and looking a good...
