FOR ENGLISH READERS:
A huge disappointment – a warning for anyone craving authentic Turkish cuisine.
As two Turks traveling around Thailand for two months, we were excited to find a place that claimed to serve “Turkish meze and kebab.” Unfortunately, neither the food, nor the service, nor the atmosphere met even the most basic expectations.
A few minutes after sitting down, we were greeted by (presumably) the owner. When he realized we were Turkish, his expression instantly changed — the warmth vanished, and communication dropped to almost zero. There was none of the friendliness or hospitality you would expect from a Turkish meyhane.
Food & Service Order: • We ordered a 4-meze plate (babagannuş, atom, ezme, tuna lakerda). He simply said, “We ran out of chili for the atom,” and replaced it with plain garlic yogurt. The ezme was overwhelmingly spicy, the babagannuş was drowned in tahini (you couldn’t taste the eggplant), and the lakerda was excessively salty with laughably small portions. • The Adana kebab arrived first, mezze followed 4–5 minutes later, and bread another 15 minutes after that — by the time the bread arrived, we had already finished our main dish. The entire serving order was completely wrong. • Despite being freshly grilled, the Adana kebab was lukewarm, made with under-cooked and fatty beef, and chewy like gum. One portion was 460 baht, and the extra skewer cost 230 baht, so we paid 690 baht for two skewers. • We waited for the shrimp dish, but even after finishing our meal it never came. When we asked, they told us they had “accidentally prepared vegetable stew instead.” We canceled it.
Atmosphere: The large charcoal grill inside fills the entire restaurant with smoke — by the end, our clothes and hair reeked of it.
Summary: • Lukewarm, poorly cooked meat and chaotic serving sequence • Tiny portions, high prices (we paid 1,150 baht in total) • Cold, inattentive service
Although it’s the only “Turkish Meyhane” in Koh Phangan, it doesn’t live up to the name — neither in taste nor in spirit. If you’re craving Turkish food, don’t bother. And if you’re just looking for Mediterranean cuisine, there are much better options on the island for...
Read moreA little taste of Turkey in paradise! We recently visited Turkuaz in Koh Phangan and were so impressed with the entire experience. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, with beautiful Turkish touches that make you feel like you’ve been transported straight to Istanbul.
The food was absolutely delicious – fresh, flavorful, and cooked with love. We tried almost everything. Especially manti was really delicious. Memes were also amazing! You can really feel the passion behind the cooking.
The owners are so kind and friendly, and they made us feel right at home. It’s rare to find such genuine hospitality. Whether you’re craving comfort food or curious to try something new, Turkuaz is a must-visit on the island.
Highly recommended – we’ll definitely be...
Read moreAuthentic Turkish cuisine from a brand new Phangan venture. The charming owner Mehmet, an island habitué hailing from Istanbul and Bodrum, opened Turkuaz as the island's only "meyhane" in a quiet leafy location near the sunset hotspots along the Hin Kong coastline. Try the spinach filled manti, tiny ravioli type dumplings, coated in a superb yoghurt sauce, the "Farang Mountain", an outrageously mouthwatering interpretation of the Turkish gavurdag diced tomato salad, and the equally well crafted carrot salad. Friends praised the lamb shish kebab, cacik (tzaziki, but finer) and Turkish rice pudding dessert. Oh, and here at last is a place that serves raki! Not...
