The Club by Zazen — Restaurant in Ko Samui

Enjoyed a good dinner right by the beach at the newly refurbished restaurant with beach club sensibility. The ambiance was spot on upon entry and the design of the place is just refreshing to be in - very nicely executed. Although we were seated right by the balcony directly above the beach, the scenery was just beautiful but as the sun sets the place becomes a little too dark. The only things visible were the table lamps as there were absolutely no other source of light at the beachfront balcony area. A little too dark for me personally.

The dinner was overall enjoyable and every dishes were freshly prepared and nicely cooked. I especially enjoyed both the two salmon dishes and the calamari. The tiramisu was just ok, but the pannacotta was not a pass - the cream I find was just too dense and rather hardened so the texture wasn't at all smooth like what I expect of the dessert. I will note additionally despite the beautiful presentations, the strawberry that comes with both the tiramisu and pannacotta became a challenge to consume as the strawberry wasn't 100% sliced, and we were given 1 small dessert spoon - and no knife - to dig tiresomely into the fruit; asked myself a bit if they were meant to be eaten to an extent?

Service was good. Staff were attentive and helpful. I have to note that their digital menu is an impressive touch - innovative and environmentally conscious with less paper being used. Kudos!

Disappointing.

For a somewhat premium place, it was unacceptable that there were a lot of ants all over the table. I had to change to another table because I was beginning to lose my appetite.

Service was below mediocre, the staff that served our table was unfriendly and uncommunicative.

Ordered three appetizers, two of which were salads and one was a deep fried soft shell crab, unless they had to go fish for the crab it made zero sense for those dishes to take half an hour to be served. The restaurant was not full either sans my table and two other tables.

View was alright but there was trash in the water/by the shore which did affect the environment as a whole. We were told we could not stay by the pool after our meal which was disappointing but I guess some places do have this rule implemented.

Edit: The manager Oliver messaged me to personally apologize for the experience and invited me back with no charge which showed good service recovery. Unfortunately I have already left Koh Samui but I still appreciated the offer and sincerity, so I will amend my rating of the service to a higher one just based on his service which was a much better representation of what I was expecting going to a place such as The Club.

I briefly interacted with the manager towards the end of my meal when I asked for the bill. Although he did not take care of our table, he was the only one who was professional and very attentive. It was just a pity that I had a bad experience...
