The Tonga Restaurant & Bar — Restaurant in Phang-nga Province

BEWARE!!!! Very disappointing!! Don’t get conned!! Tonight we were heading to one of the many beach restaurants in BangSak near our hotel and sadly got lured in to The Tonga restaurant and bar with its fire show. As we were walking past the Tonga restaurant the staff were making a grand display of placing fish in ice on the beach in front of the restaurant. See pics!! A bespectacled guy showed us this ‘fresh’ fish on ice , outside on the beach and offered us a whole red snapper to share for a ‘very special ‘ price. He said it came with salad and rice and was plenty to share and we could enjoy the fire show from a front row table. He explained how the fish would be cooked and from the way he spoke we thought he was going to be the one cooking it!! We hadn’t really tried any fish whilst in Thailand so far and so decided we would treat ourselves. I was on the phone when the fish was brought to the table just a few minutes after placing our order and sitting down!! We couldn’t believe it. There were just pieces of battered fish sitting on top of a fish carcass accompanied by a very small bit of salad and one small green banana leaf shaped in a cone of rice between us!! ( See pics!! ) We were shocked as had expected a whole fish on the plate as we would get in Australia. We didn’t really like to complain but wish we had prior to eating… and had returned it!! We did say to the same guy in glasses when he passed, asking us what we thought of the fish that it wasn’t what we were expecting at all and he rambled on something about the chef had to fillet the fish ready for us to eat. We’re not sure what fish we were actually given, could have been anything soaked in sweet chilli sauce!! The guy would not confirm what fish was in the batter and just shrugged and left….. So we were left with little choice but to eat the pieces of fish ( around 12 small pieces at the most) . However I decided to approach the guy in spectacles and share my displeasure. He really wasn’t interested at all. On a positive note I must point out that the staff were very attentive and the young lads doing the fire show were brilliant and well worth a tip!! However beware!!’ Do NOT get sucked in like us for an overpriced , very underrated meal!! The worst meal we’ve had in our 2 weeks here!! Note - we have eaten at least 6 times at the Small Kitchen which I believe is also under the same owners - no problems whatsoever!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND DINING AT THE TONGA RESTAURANT IN KHAO LAK - AND DON’T MISS THEIR FIRE SHOW!!!

The Tonga Resturant is exceptionally amazing! I conversed over social media with a member of the restaurant who helped me book a table for our family on a night they were holding their fire show performance - and we were excitedly amazed with the experience we had.

We had an awesome, front row table on the beach with a beautiful view overlooking the water. The atmosphere at The Tonga is welcoming and friendly with all staff very accomodating. As the night settles in, the surrounds were lit up with overhead strong lights creating a beautiful atmosphere over dinner.

The food was absolutely amazing! Everything came out fresh and hot and exactly to order with no issues and accompanied with towelettes to freshen up after we had eaten. The cocktails are wonderful! So delicious and everything was fair priced 😊

The fire show was an epic performance with Tong and his crew delivering amazement and wonder over the course of their performance. So much so that our sons bought a pair of practise string lights at spent the rest of the evening learning tricks from Tong and practising. In the beach until it was time to go. Tong was amazing, welcoming and friendly and our sons enjoyed spending time with him practising their light tricks on the beach.

The staff ensured our dining experience was amazing and even organised a taxi to drive us back to our resort promptly and safely at the end of the evening.

Wir waren zwei mal im Tonga. Erster Besuch nachmittags war bis auf die selbst für den Strand in Khao Lak hohen Preise noch in Ordnung. Die Kellnerin hatte jedoch für Thailand eine derart negative Ausstrahlung, dass wir eigentlich nicht wieder ins Tonga gehen wollten. Thaifood und Cocktails waren ok, aber aber auch nichts besonderes. Wir gaben dem Tonga jedoch trotzdem eine zweite Chance, da wir nach dem ganzen Thaifood einmal etwas westliches Essen wollten. Wir hatten die gleiche Kellnerin erneut erwischt und es bestätigte sich, dass sie beim ersten Besuch nicht nur einen schlechten Tag hatte. Wir bestellten zunächst Getränke und die Dame wollte eine Empfehlung aussprechen und pries uns den Lobster an. Wir sagten wir brauchten mal wieder was anderes als Thaifood etc. und nach andauerndem Verkaufsgespräch gab die Dame irgendwann fürs erste zum Glück auf. Die Getränke kamen und die Dame fing direkt wieder auf gebrochenem Englisch an ihren Lobster anzupreisen anstatt unsere Essensbestellung aufzunehmen. Wir wiederholten uns, bestellten Frühlingsrollen und Pizza und die Dame erzählte trotzdem weiter irgendwas über ihren Lobster. Dies ging trotz mehrfachen deutlichen Aussagen unsererseits fast 5 Minuten so und wurde irgendwann wirklich nervig. Man fühlte sich fast wie auf einem Basar, da nach jedem Nein die Bedienung irgendein gratis extra (Reis etc.) anbot, um uns doch ihren Lobster anzudrehen. Einmal eine Empfehlung aussprechen: sehr gut. Ein zweites mal nachfragen: ok. Aber insgesamt 10 Minuten den Lobster angedreht zu bekommen ist einfach nur nervig. Musste dieser dringend Weg, da nicht mehr ganz so frisch oder wieso? Das Lobsterprozedere beobachteten wir auch an zich weiteren Tischen. Der arme Lobster wurde wirklich quer durch den ganzen Laden getragen und präsentiert. Naja. Das Essen kam und wir erhielten für 200 Baht vier mickrige Frühlingsrollen. Das sind rund 1,30€ für eine mickrige Frühlingsrolle, die zudem nicht selbstgemacht aussah. Dies wäre selbst für deutsche Asialäden überteuert und beschämend. In jedem anderem Restaurant an diesem Strandabschnitt gibt es diese günstiger und deutlich mehr auf dem Teller. Die Pizza ware zudem so lala, aber hier wollen wir mal nicht so sein. Selber schuld wenn man Pizza in Thailand bestellt ;) Insgesamt essen sie in allen Restaurant an diesem Strandabschnitt deutlich besser und zum Teil auch noch günstiger. Das Chang kostet hier beispielsweise 90 Baht, 100 Meter weiter im Green Restaurant oder in der Happy Bar (können wir jeweils empfehlen) nur 60. Dieser Preisunterschied zieht sich fast durch die gesamte Speisekarte und läppert sich bei einem Abendessen für 2 Personen gerne mal auf ein paar 100 Baht. Zudem ist die Qualität des Essens im Tonga sogar schlechter. 2 Läden weiter ist das Thap Tawan Beach Restaurant mit ähnlichen Preisen, aber deutlich besserer Qualität des Essens, mehr auf dem Teller und authentischer thailändischer Gastfreundschaft. Ob sie eins der drei empfohlen oder irgendein anderes Restaurant wählen, überall werden sie ein besseres Preis-Leistungsverhältnis erhalten als im Tonga. Immerhin ist die Aufmachung des Ladens ganz nett und die Kunden Urlauber die in den ersten schönen Laden gehen, ansonsten würde sich wohl kaum jemand dauerhaft ins Tonga verirren. Diese Einstellung spürt man im Tonga und der Kunde ist hier ganz sicher nicht König, sondern eher das Geld. Abgerundet wird dies nur noch dadurch, dass in allen anderen besuchten Restaurants nach dem Essen eine Aufmerksamkeit alla Wassermelone, Mango etc. gratis serviert wird nur im...
