Unfortunately, as someone who has consistently and actively supported the vegetarian industry (especially considering I traveled an hour to visit this restaurant), this is my first time writing a negative review. The environment was excellent (I've rated as 5 stars), and I really appreciated the idea of having guests change their shoes before entering. However, everything went downhill after placing the order.
The serverās English skills were average, so I ended up pointing at items on the menu to place my order. Interestingly, even with that, they still brought the wrong dish. Whatās even more surprising is that the server implied it was my fault and suggested that I take the incorrect dish to-go and reorder. (Perhaps this is a cultural difference, but in my country, such behaviorāshifting responsibility onto the customerāwould make it impossible for a business to survive.)
Accepting the situation, I thought, āItās fine, mistakes happen. Who knows? Maybe the wrong dish will turn out to be great.ā Unfortunately, it turned out to be extremely salty and bitter. I understand that curries can have a variety of flavors, but bitterness is definitely not one of them. I donāt believe the ingredients were supposed to taste this way either.
I grew up in a culture where we are expected to finish all the food on our plate, but unfortunately, this time, I simply couldnāt do it.
Therefore, to ensure vegetarian restaurants donāt rely solely on ambiance to define their success, I felt compelled to leave an honest review:
The food was, quite frankly, disappointing. After visiting Thailand countless times over the past ten years, I never expected the worst curry Iāve ever had to come from a restaurant I had such high hopes for.
The serverās āpretend-to-understandā approach. I donāt believe all servers need to be fluent in a non-native language, but honesty is important. I would have preferred using a translation app to communicate rather than being misunderstood and then blamed for it.
That said, I still hope your restaurant continues to grow and becomes a positive presence in the vegetarian community, rather than just a place with a superficial...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThe building and interior are stunning, with an authentic Thai atmosphere. There is a free parking lot, and the toilets are clean, with one for each gender. You have to change your shoes before entering.
Service: The staff are okay and helpful, explaining how to eat some traditional Thai dishes. They dress in traditional Thai attire, which is pretty cool. I reserved a table with my name, but it seemed hard to pronounce, as I kept hearing the staff attempting to say it behind the counter. This was not professional, especially since I was present. When I was about to exit, a staff member almost hit me with the door while opening it for another customer, and there was no apology.
Food: The staff will serve you a welcome drink of cool water with jasmine, which has a wonderful, refreshing aroma. There are many options for Thai vegetarian dishes, including some traditional dishes that are hard to find. The Khao Chae looks pretty and tastes okay. The Deep Fried Thai Appetiser looks appealing, but each item tastes the same, with the only difference being the outer wrap. The Earthstar mushrooms curry tasted really good, although the mushrooms were a bit chewy.
All these comments are based on my personal experience. I would recommend trying this place if you are interested in traditional Thai food with a...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI had the pleasure of dining at Vegan Mahanakhon while visiting Thailand, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of my trip. This fully plant-based restaurant is a true gem ā not only for vegans, but for anyone who appreciates thoughtful, flavorful food.
The space is small and cozy, with a relaxed, casual feel. Itās not fancy, but itās clean and welcoming. The staff were friendly, attentive, and helpful in explaining the dishes, which was especially appreciated since it was my first time there.
The menu offered a great variety of Thai-inspired vegan dishes, all beautifully presented and packed with flavor. I tried several items, including a fragrant curry, fresh spring rolls, and a stir-fry with tofu and local vegetables. Each dish was well-balanced, satisfying, and made with fresh ingredients. The portions were generous but not overwhelming.
What impressed me most was how flavorful everything was ā rich, spicy, and complex without being heavy. Itās clear that the chefs know how to bring out the best in plant-based ingredients.
The prices were very reasonable, especially considering the quality. Overall, Vegan Mahanakhon is a must-visit for anyone in Bangkok looking for delicious, nourishing food. Iāll definitely return next time...
