Som Som Seafood on Banthat Thong is one of those places where the night feels like a celebration. Tables fill with families, friends, and students, and before long, it feels like every table is competing to see who can order more crab.
The Food Seafood here means serious business. Tanks at the front let you know freshness isn’t in question. The yellow curry crab is the dish people rave about, and for good reason — jumbo meat, rich curry, bold flavor without being greasy. We paired it with grilled river prawns the size of your hand, charred smoky from the fire. A plate of clams steamed with lemongrass tasted clean and herbal, while stir-fried morning glory gave the table a crunchy, garlicky balance. Crab fried rice rounded it all out, fluffy and rich with chunks of meat. Portions are generous, built for sharing, and prices, while not cheap, are fair considering the quality.
Service & Atmosphere Service is fast and efficient. Staff know how to handle the rush and will walk you through specials if you’re not sure where to start. The restaurant runs across two levels: downstairs is open-air with fans, upstairs has air-conditioning — a blessing in Bangkok heat. Even when it’s busy, dishes come out steadily. Expect a wait during peak hours, but that’s part of the buzz here.

Final Take Som Som Seafood isn’t polished fine dining — it’s Bangkok’s version of a seafood party. Fresh crab, massive prawns, a little chaos, and a lot of flavor. Come hungry, bring friends, and be ready to get your...
Read moreWe saw the good reviews and went on 18 Mar 2023. But it was a huge disappointment and it was the worst meal in our six days in Bangkok. The food is overpriced compared to other stalls in the area. The crab glass noodles is flavourful but the portion is too small and definitely not worth the price of 1690THB. We also ordered Tom Yum soup and oyster fried egg, but they are just below average. The place does not have aircon, so it can be quite hot during lunchtime on sunny days. Personally based on the food that I’ve tried, I won’t visit again and I wouldn’t recommend this place as there are many better options around the corner. On the other hand, the service is ok, the waiters are friendly can speak some English and they have English menu. I would have given an average 3-star review if it weren’t for the bad experience I had when paying the bill. When I ask for the bill, the waitress gave me a list of 8 items written only in Thai totalling approximately 3000THB, which is much higher than what we have ordered, as we had only ordered 3 food items for 2 people. So I asked the waitress to clarify. The waitress then brought me the menu and pointed out the food that I supposedly ordered, most of which we did not order at all! She then said that she brought the wrong bill. In the end, the correct bill was 2000THB. If we didn’t check the bill carefully we would have overpaid by 1000THB. I hope this was just a special case for me, but I recommend carefully checking the price and using google translate to translate the bill...

The very next day, we had light breakfast for we wanted to feast on seafood at Som Som Seafood, a highly recommended restaurant by a friend. It took us about 15 minutes walk from our accommodation which almost for me murdered due to the hot weather. Should have taken Grab instead of risking my life like that 😅
The restaurant has no air-cond, only fans to keep the whole place ventilated. An English menu is placed outside for non-Thai tourists.
◾A classic Chang beer to start off the lunch sounded like a perfect beginning. ◾Fried oyster omelette which I love the still runny texture of the egg, plus the not-so-stingy amount of oysters. ◾Roasted Roe crab with glass noodle is a must order as the glass noodle was soaked with the sweetness ◾Grilled River Prawn had a few sizes to choose from which we opted for Large. No regret as the delicious creamy roe made it worth paying the price. ◾Blanched cockles - also known as hoy kraeng in Thai, this is one of the popular street food. The morsels were done medium and the chilly sauce was very addictive.
Note: It was not the restaurant's fault but both of us were down with food poisoning not long after that, which we suspect due to the cockles. I had to say that none of the cockles had gone bad, but there was certainly risk consuming...
