For food, we tried the pork wontons, the ODA and TSUKI sushi rolls, the SENSHI bowl, and the Teriyaki salmon. The highlights were definitely the pork wontons and the salmon as both were well-seasoned and flavorful. The TSUKI roll was great as well. Everything else was just okay. The shrimp in the Senshi bowl was quite rubbery, and the salmon surprisingly hit the table cold. If you prefer hot entrées, this might not be the best fit. Food: 3/5 As for the atmosphere, the Japanese décor was aesthetically pleasing, but the indoor layout and music could use some improvement. We were seated in a smaller room that felt cramped and poorly lit, and the music was so loud it was difficult to hold a conversation. I’d give the indoor atmosphere 3/5 (though I’d like to try the outdoor seating next time). Service was fine overall, and the staff was pleasant. However, I have to take off one star because my Senshi bowl order was mixed up. I had asked for no onions and no plantain, but still received plantain in my dish. This may have been because the music was so loud the server couldn’t hear me clearly. Service:4/5 Overall, tasty food with a couple of standouts, great drinks, and nice décor but the indoor atmosphere and temperature of the entrées might not be for everyone.

My bestie and I recently had my annual celebratory birthday lunch/dinner at Samurai. First of all, this it was her first time experiencing eating sushi, and well I'm a little more experienced but it was a first at this restaurant. The ambience was picturesque with esthetically pleasing; Grounded in nature, its Japanese based design is simple and yet effective at setting a mood. The service from our host and steward was excellent. We were well attended to and most satisfied with the quality and level of professionalism. Food, oh yes the food! Well, my friend for sure was hesitant at first with all the stigma about raw fish but it's safe to say she's a converted sushi eater and most likely will try it again based on her experience at Samurai. Especially the Crispy Shrimp and Crispy California rolls, they are semi-cooked. I particularly liked the overall experience. The sushi was sumptuous and fulling, and my complimentary birthday ice-cream just topped off the celebration.

I read a reddit a few days back about the best sushi in Trinidad, that triggered a craving. Visited here, as I've always had good experiences without breaking the bank. On the reddit, someone mentioned, try the calamari. Failure. Too much air filled batter, reminded me of Long John Silver' shrimp poppers. And... the rings were not seasoned before being dipped, so once you bite past batter, you ended up with defrosted tasting squid rings. Maybe it was an off day, because the sushi platter was not at it's usual quality either, the tuna was actually hard. The drinks did not dissapoint though. I will return, if only to convince myself that the last visit was on an off day. Staff is always excellent to deal with. Edit: The calamari tasted excellent after an overnight in the fridge. The puffed up batter had deflated and eaten with the peppers and onions it was served with just resulted in an explosion of flavors and spices.

I visited here on October 29th 2022 which was my birthday and might I say this was one of the worst birthday experiences ever. First of all, we made reservations to come eat here 2 days before and as we arrived we saw that they were setting up some kind of party. We went inside and couldn't hear a single thing, we had to either talk at the top of our lungs or write what we wanted to say on our phones to communicate with the waiter. Is this a carnival fete or a restaurant? They asked us if we were not notified of the event that was taking place, which we were not, even the staff said they were not informed until the day of the event. We were moved to outside upon our request cause of the noise. When we went outside the tables were extremely rocky and there was still noise coming from the event decorators assembling the stage. Many passersby involved with this event frequently had to walk in front of our tables the entire time we were eating which was highly bothersome. Now don't let me get started on the food, we ordered the Saturday Smashers and I was severely disappointed, while eating I wished I had just ordered KFC instead. The pork and chicken was as dry as the Sahara, tasteless, cold and rubbery, the tacos were not even tacos, they were tortilla chips. The miso soup was the only thing that was ok as well as the sushi. I felt as though my money could have been better spent somewhere else. Now down to the waitress, I told her it was my birthday and she said she would deliver a birthday treat for me. Another waitress brought it instead and the words she greeted us with were, "Is somebody's birthday here?". When I tell you I was in disbelief, she could've at least said happy birthday, very distasteful and rude. Upon finishing our meals, she proceeded to take my birthday plate which i wasn't even finished with and I had to tell her I wasn't done with it. I would never recommend here to anyone and I wish I could get back my money and spend my...

I visited Samurai Restaurant in Port of Spain last Saturday night with hopes of a satisfying Japanese meal. While there were some okay elements, the experience was ultimately defined by a series of disappointments that kept it from being good.

On the positive side, the service was prompt and our orders were taken without delay. The portion size of the meals was also generous.

However, the issues began with the atmosphere. The interior feels very dated and could use a refresh to create a more authentic vibe. The music choice was a major mismatch—playing generic dancehall tracks instead of something that complements the cuisine, which really broke the immersion.

The main letdown was the food and drinks. I ordered the Chicken Katsu Curry, a classic dish I was looking forward to. While the portion was large, the chicken katsu itself was slightly over-fried and chewy rather than crispy and light. The curry sauce, though a good quantity, was overwhelmingly salty, which overshadowed the other spices and flavors. This wasn't an isolated case, as other dishes at our table suffered from the same overseasoning.

To top it off, the soft drinks were completely flat, with no carbonation whatsoever, making them syrupy and unpleasant. This was especially needed to counterbalance the saltiness of the food but failed miserably.

There's potential here, but Samurai feels like it's resting on its laurels. With updated décor, better music, more care in the kitchen with seasoning, and attention to basic details like carbonated drinks, it could be so much better. For now, it's a forgettable...

A friend of mine and I went to Samurai last Thursday for dinner because we are both from away, I am from Canada and he's from Germany, both half Trinis and constantly in Trinidad. I was telling him how great sushi is here and that we need to go. The sushi I will say, was great, the service on the other hand left alot to be desired. We weren't even asked how we enjoyed the food, she only came once we were finished our food. We were given an empty soya bottle but she never came back so we couldn't ask for any. We placed a second order and when I asked for the soya sauce she was rude about it, and then brought us 3 packets between the two of us. She also didn't ask us how our second round was or if we needed anything else. Then when she brought the bill and we waited for our change she couldn't even be bother to bring it to is, she stood on the concrete platform and reached her arm out and we had to stretch to meet her as we were sitting on the grassy area. No, thank you for coming, not enjoy your night, absolutely no pleasantries you would expect from someone in customer service. Even when we left the host and waitress just stood at the podeum and just let us walk about without any thank you or goodnight. Luckily the food was great and I was with good company or I may have just left. I really don't expect the world, as I am also a server, but the basics at least. Possibly she doesn't care because service charge is built in, but trust me, she did not deserve...
