3 Fils is currently ranked #6 best restaurant in the MENA region, and it did not disappoint. If you live in Dubai or ever visit, you have to try this restaurant located in the lovely Jumeirah Fishing Harbour. The restaurant serves Japanese food with smaller portions, so it’s nice to share as a group. To start off we got the Salmon Carpaccio, super light and refreshing with lime and sesame oil. Then the Tampachi Tataki, refreshing as well but felt it was a very mild flavor. Also got the Hokkaido Scallops, interesting flavor with the mandarin pieces and sumac. Next we got the Spicy Beef Tartare, wow what a dish! Served with toasted sourdough bread, the tartare was literally like butter and had the perfect amount of spice. Then we tried the Charcoal, it’s a surprise as mentioned in the menu so don’t want to ruin it, but it was a vegetarian dish served with a lovely sauce. The Charcoal is served on literal charcoal pieces and the exterior was tough similar to charcoal, nice experience. My absolute favorite dish of the meal were the wings topped with soy garlic and togarashi spices. The chicken was super moist with a crispy, sweet and spicy skin, highly recommend. For the sushi round, we tried 3 different sushi rolls. One thing that 3 Fils is keen on is that they don’t serve soy sauce. Volcano Roll would be my favorite from the ones we tried, came with salmon teriyaki with gochujang sauce. Next the Crispy Eel, which was unique as the rice was separate from the eel, so you needed to combine them yourself to enjoy it together. Then the Spicy Tuna Roll, for me the texture was off, it was super mushy. But the flavor was nice, served with samjang, spicy Korean paste and wasabi mayo. For the main we had the 72 hour Lamb Ribs, a must order dish that fell of the bone effortlessly and tasted delicious. Also a must try is the Indomie, Yes Indomie, which came with beef chorizo, broccoli and snap peas. The flavor was incredible, mostly from the oils of the beef chorizo. For dessert, another dish that you need to try was the Karak Ice Cream. It was plated table side with a bit of a show. The main part was the karak flavored ice cream, tasted just like karak and I really liked it. It was served with a milk foam cream and drizzled with butterscotch as well as a black tea crumble. Very strong flavors that went so well with each other. Food: 9/10 Price: 8/10 Location: 8/10

Not so hidden secret in Jumeirah, with a relaxing view of the harbor… 3 fils is far from the insta crazy crowd (thank heavens for that!) and instead attracts a certain clientele looking for something different, something interesting. We called in early to ask if a reservation was required and the answer was a flat “we don’t accept reservations but you can just walk in. We have a place for you” Getting here could be quite confusing. Don’t trust Google maps as it leads you to the EXIT gate. We started with Hokkaido Scallops, which was a nice plate of plump scallops in ponzu and soy dressing. Orange segments and buckwheat gave pops of texture. The dish was promising but I felt like this was slightly unbalanced though. The next two dishes were much much better. The spicy tuna sushi just had a nice tingle on the palate without overpowering. The crispy eel took time to arrive but the wait was worth it. The unagi pieces were covered in a light as feather batter and served separately from the rolls. That made us appreciate the texture and taste more. Soy was definitely not needed in either dish. The Sakura Ebi was quite interesting in the sense that I expected a tempura or prawn dish. What we got instead was a bowl of thin noodles coated in a garlicky aioli with flecks of (what I think are rehydrated) baby shrimp. Very very flavorful small dish. We ended the meal with karak ice cream which was served table side with quite a flair. The ice cream was smooth and the combination of the cardamom foam, crispy wafer, and black tea bits was almost a party in the mouth.. almost because i wished it were more karak-forward as the iconic drink it’s named after is unashamedly forward in its flavor profile. I definitely know it translates well into ice cream since I often make karak ice cream at home. Service was friendly. They even gave us samples of dressings. Overall, the dishes were beautifully made. Just wish the servings were slightly larger since they feel like they’re part of a tasting menu. Would we be back? In a heartbeat.

Our visit started with a warm welcome from the staff by the door and we are quickly taken to our choice of table. The waiting staff seats us on a lovely table with a view of the fishing harbour and takes our drink order right away. We started of with some signature drinks: NOUGHTY ROSE -Strawberry, rose, saffron and non-alcoholic champagne & SHIKUWASA - Ginger soda, sudanchi lime Shortly after our meal order is placed the dishes start arriving and the waiter assures us they do not serve soy at 3 fils because the dishes are well-marinated and seasoned. SEAWEED SALAD - this was a well balanced combination of fresh seaweed, bitterness of Granny Smith green apples and sweetness of caramelised walnuts SALMON CARPACCIO - Thinly sliced salmon generously floating in Ponzu sesame, lime and black chilli We tried the SALMON NIGIRI & OTORO NIGIRI (otoro is the fatty belly of tuna) made of superb quality fish, rich in taste and just melt-in-your-mouth texture. DRAGON - the dish looks playful with crispy Shrimp tempura, gochujang and pickled onions We were served a secret dish - charcoal fry - served on a bed of real charcoals. As advised by the waiter we were to eat only the edible ‘charcoal’ and discover the flavours inside. After taking a careful bite of the black briquette it turns out to be a squid ink tempura-fried aubergine and we are served some spicy pepper sauce for dipping. The menu is small, but the staff makes excellent recommendations and if you fancy dessert, you’re in luck, as there’s a small dessert bar – Brix – where your sweet cravings will be satisfied. This hidden gem is not so hidden anymore after winning the No.1 Best Restaurant in Middle East & North Africa, but the quality of the food and the welcoming service of their staff is surely what makes it your go to spot for a lunch or dinner with a lovely view of the fishing harbour.

My night at 3 fils with my brother and dad was a mixed experience. The setting is great - especially when sitting outside, with a great view of downtown Dubai and the city's skyline, juxtaposed with a local fishing port that feels functional and not just for decoration. Additionally, Dubai's food scene is filled with overseas imports, so I was excited to try out 3 Fils given it's homegrown nature. We ordered a variety of dishes from an alluring, and diverse menu, with dishes ranging from sushi to wagyu burgers. First to arrive were the former, with spicy tuna rolls and a variety of marinated raw seafood. The sushi was good, but not spectacular, with the marinated dishes superior. A particular highlight was raw scallop, evidently of high quality and accentuated by an acidic marinade. Of the subsequent dishes, most were good, some spectacular, and others not great. My favorite of the evening was an incredible wagyu burger, full of varying textures with a delicious beefy flavor. It may well have been the best burger I've ever had. Fried chicken wings were also delicious, with a great texture and addictive spicy, sweet and tangy flavor. On the opposite end, perhaps most disappointing was salmon maki, with lackluster fish and sushi rice. A beef tartare shared a similar fate to the maki. Overall, with an understanding of what dishes to order at 3 Fils there is definitely the potential for an excellent dinner. Nonetheless, for the price and the accolades the restaurant has amassed, my experience was not flawless.

This place is iconic, and for good reason. There is a serious level of dedication to the flavors produced here and every item on the menu was designed to make those flavors hit your taste buds. It’s technically a “Japanese” style of menu, but it’s fused with a pretty modern set of items that can suit anyone. They have sushi items, burgers, fish dishes, octopus, noddles etc. you won’t get bored. It is non alcoholic so keep this in mind - you’re there for the food and atmosphere anyway! A must try is the coal dish. The wait times can be problematic in the evenings, they do not accept reservations and so from 7pm onwards you’re basically on a wait list. The line seems to move pretty fast though. Ask the staff for recommendation, they are super helpful and kind. You’re going to have to go in with a specific budget in mind depending on the experience you’re looking for, so here is a bit of a guide: 1- two/three friends just hanging out over a few bites - AED150-200 2- four hungry people that want to feel satisfied but not overly full - AED550 - 600 3- five people or more that want to try at least 8 items (some special menu some regular menu) and feel satisfied - AED900 - 1,000 4- best culinary experience to try as many of the menu items as possible and feel satisfied - AED1,200+ Of course you can tailor your experience as you like, but it’s worth trying some of the staple basics as in the pictures I posted (all of that was approx AED 900, but we doubled up on some of those dishes and got drinks).
