Not bad, not great. I grew up in Bradford and I'm very lucky to have had many excellent curries and this was not one.
It feels like they do too many dishes to maintain a level of quality as my medium vegetable bhuna was not even mild with spice and my partner's chicken masala was too sweet with a thin sauce. I know that curries vary depending on region but it wasn't great.
The chapatis, naan and rice were good. The tarka dahl was tasty although the huge chunks of garlic in it were offputting.
Though size is subjective, the portions were not huge to me and this may be a quality control issue for the restaurant across their dishes. Some of the images here show full silver bowls, mine filled just up to half, as did my partner's.
The biggest let down was actually the service. One person on another table had to specify they wanted a raspberry gin ten times (no exaggeration) and the table next to us had to ask for drinks repeatedly. We waited for a long time to get checked on, our plates cleared and our bill.
If you've not had many good curries before, this could blow you away. If you're vegetarian or vegan with a big appetite, I'd recommend getting lots of side dishes (which is what I wish I did). The staff were pleasant and we may have just encountered one new person or a person struggling with language/communication/hearing.
Would I go back again? Nope, too many variables and too much of a risk. Maybe you'll strike it lucky, as...
Read moreOriginally from the North East and been living in London for over 30 years. My parents live in Alnwick and I have been visiting regularly in their old age and my mother mentioned Sherkahnâ had won awards. So I tried a takeaway for the first time about 18 months ago!
Having eaten out of Brick Lane in some awesome basic Indian, Pakistani, Bengali and Sri Lankan cafes and restaurants, had meals at Atul Kocharâs, Cyrus Todiwalaâs and Asma Khanâs Darjeeling Express restaurants in London Iâve had some pretty authentic, unique Indian cuisine. Sherkhanâs is up there with the best of the above!
Iâm in Alnwick visiting again this week and was feeling pretty rough with a sore throat and a bit blocked up, so I decided to order some Indian medicinal grub! Wow! As they catered to my needs by dialing the heat up in my Jalfrezi which cured my soar throat and bunged up nose, I now feel cured. Had the chicken Kathi KebabâŚwow! Saag Alloo spices were fab, Mutter Paneer was perfect, had beautiful mushroom rice and the Special Naan is a winner with keema, garlic and coriander. That Lamb Jalfrezi just blew my mind as recommended when I ordered, so donât be afraid to let them help if youâre not sure. Best thing is Iâve got the other half for tomorrow night!
Everyone in Alnwick and all visitors should treasure this beautiful jewel in the crown. I for one can wait to place...
Read moreWe came across Sherkhans by chance after a day out in Alnwick. Wow, are we glad we decided to dine here!!!!!!!
The poppadoms were fresh and crispy with a tangy pickle tray. Our main dishes of Vegetable Punjabi Karahi and Chicken Tikka Zal Roshon were extremely rich in flavour and packed with spices, chillis and garlic. The Garlic and Cheese naan was the lightest and fluffiest I have ever tasted (and I've had a lot!) Proving the freshness of the dough. The complimentary hot lemon towlettes and After Eights dinner mints for us to freshen up and cleanse our palettes were greatly appreciated.
A gentleman called Quiyum spent 10 minutes chatting to us at the end of our meal, discussing local tourist spots and a little history about the resteraunt. For us, this is the extra personal touch that makes an already excellent meal into an enjoyable full dining experience. Plus on our way out, another gentleman asked us how the meal was and enquired about the curries we had chosen, as he wanted to make sure the heat level was ok for us, after we had discussed this previously when ordering.
Superb service all round and the low cost bill was a...
