This review is in no way a reflection of the quality of the food or the waiting staff, both of which I have always found to be exceptionally good. Rather, it concerns a deeply upsetting incident that has left me reluctant to return to the Arun View Inn.
I have been a regular visitor to this pub ever since moving to Littlehampton, and until now, I have never experienced racial abuse here—or anywhere in the area. Unfortunately, during my most recent visit, a young man at the bar subjected me to shocking verbal abuse. This began simply because I politely asked him to stop sipping my drink that I had ordered and paid for. His response was a barrage of racial slurs that left me both shocked and distressed.
Although I initially attempted to de-escalate the situation, the argument quickly became heated, and he proceeded to hurl further appalling racial insults at me. What was particularly disheartening was the response—or lack thereof—from the bar staff, who witnessed the entire exchange and made no effort to intervene. When I eventually spoke to a member of staff to raise my concerns, I was told, “He is usually a nice guy.”
It is truly unfortunate that such an incident has overshadowed the many positives this pub has to offer. I strongly believe that all staff should be better informed about policies regarding inappropriate language and behavior. Immediate and decisive action should be taken to prevent racial abuse, xenophobia, discrimination, or any offensive conduct that could create a hostile environment for other people.
If no appropriate steps are taken in response to this incident and this young man is not banned from this pub I will be...
Read moreCalled in here for dinner whilst taking a super relaxed drive home from Brighton taking the coast road, dropping in at several places along the way. Ended up having a wander around Littlehampton & looking for somewhere decent to eat. The Arun View Inn did not disappoint. From the moment I walked in & announced I would like to eat I was greeted by the most hospitable landlord & offered a choice of tables & so I chose the quieter restaurant area by a window looking straight onto the river Arun. I ordered chicken supreme from the specials board which came with white wine & mushroom sauce, saute potatoes, savoy cabbage & leek, carrots & broccoli. This wascall perfectly cooked, mthe chicken was moist & delicious & the potatoes crisp & golden. A really nice dish which I thourouly enjoyed. The waitressing staff were also very attentive & came & cleared my plate etc as they clocked that I'd finished. I then ordered lemon tarte with raspberry sorbet & raspberry jus which was also jolly nice. I can hand on heart highly recommend The Arun View Inn & would go back there again in a heartbeat. Suffice to say, if I am in the area again, The Arun View will be my go to when the dinner bell rings, as apart from being good, the prices were also pretty reasonable. If you are looking for decent food & good service...
Read moreA nice inexpensive restaurant that has a good range of bar snacks and a full restaurant menu, sat right next to the river Arun. Friendly young and polite staff with our meals arriving promptly and together.
We walked about a mile from Climping Beach, past the Littlehampton old Fort, the golf ⛳ club and the many yacht ⛵ clubs that are dotted along the west side of the river, before crossing the pedestrian bridge to the pub and restaurant which is right next to the railway station.
A nice refreshing walk along the beach to help build up an appetite.
We chose the camembert in a box to share with bread and salad as our shared starter. More than ample for two. For our mains we had the fish fingers, but rather than in ciabbata bread, chose the wholemeal 🥪 bread and also the Ploughman's with chutney, a piece of cheddar, stilton and honey roast ham. Accompanied by a glass of Merlot and Rioja.
A pleasant and relaxing hour before the 45 minute walk back along the estuary and beach 🏖 to Climping.
A good value for money meal with a friendly atmosphere. Seems very popular. It was really nice that the young staff took real pride in their work. 'What are you doing for the rest of the...
