The coastal town of Littlehampton holds special memories for me as my first job was at Arundel Junction a few miles away as an apprentice railway signalman, and as a very young boy the beach where I suffered an extreme case of sun burn, so don't forget your SPF50. So my visit after many years was quite meaningful for me.||||I had booked at The Steam Packet many weeks before and I was expected about 5pm, however a train breakdown on the Southern Railway franchise caused a roll on effect causing me to arrive just after 10pm. I had phoned earlier and notified the hotel of my problem and they were very helpful telling that my key would be at the bar next door.||||The Steam Packet is very conveniently located only a short distance from the railway station. It is a very attractive traditional Inn, on arriving I went the public bar where the host was available to take me to my room and explain about the WIFI, and the room facilities, which were comprehensive. The room itself was large with a view to the river Arun only a few metres way. ||||As I hadn't eaten I went down to the bar and inquired about food, unsurprisingly the kitchen was closed but the barman and host were very helpful in telling me which cafes/ takeaways would still be open. I missed the Chinese Take-away which had just closed but a short distance was a cafe that seemingly sold everything, I got my dinner of jacket potatoes and coleslaw only a short walk from the hotel. ||||Breakfast the next day was table service and I ordered my Full English (Vegetarian) which was extra large and yummy with lentils, hash browns, tomatoes, mushrooms, eggs and toast. A real meal to get you through the day. The service was good, the location great and the room superb.||||PS Although it is an Inn the accommodation has a separate entrance, I have to say although I was a little apprehensive I experienced no noise from the Inn and I had my bedroom windows...
Read moreBooked table online, arrived and they did not know we were coming. Said dog friendly on website but really not sure they were as they seemed to want to push us to sit on the roof terrace! They didn't seem prepared for us to order food, why else would we have booked a table? The food took an hour which is fine if they are cooking from scratch but disappointingly small portions. In fact my husband and son's resembled child portions, pity it wasn't child prices. My daughter in law couldn't get the meal she ordered (burger) so opted for Greek Salad. It resembled a side dish as it was so small and to top it off she was really ill the next day!! I had a coffee and they supplied a macaron with it which couldn't be bitten, even banging it on table wouldn't crack it. Goodness knows how old it was. My daughter in law wrote to the pub to point out how ill she's been and they replied saying no-one has complained before but they had checked all the food was in date and it was fine but they had thrown out the offending items! No mention of macaron. We did notice no-one else was eating. Very disappointed and won't be returning or...
Read moreMay 2024 - Second stay at the Steam Packet! We love that is is out of the way with great views. Owners are kind and accommodating! Our room had a reasonably sized bathroom and a small, but well stocked kitchen which would be great for a longer stay. Bed was very comfortable. Room also has a small television and reliable internet. The rail station is only a few streets away, and the walk to the beaches are about .75 miles from either side. You can either take the boardwalk direct or meander though town [we love the charity shops and pubs] or cross the bridge for a more natural scene. There are a only a few places to eat in the off-season, so be prepared to hunt for the jems! Town is small but cozy and entertaining, much like the...
