The first documented use of fireworks in the UK was at the wedding of King Henry VII and Elizabeth of York in 1486. They became more popular under Queen Elizabeth I. In 1572 an area on the island at Warwick Castle was set up to host the first firework display to celebrate the queen visiting the castle. When King Henry VIII fell out with the Catholic Church he made himself the head of the Church of England. He ‘dissolved’ all of the monasteries, taking the buildings, land and property for himself. Poor people washed their linen underwear but did not wash their outer clothes. The smell of wood smoke from their fires acted like a deodorant to help mask their bad smell. Rich people slept in strong wooden beds with a canopy over the top and curtains around the bed to help keep the warmth in. Poor people slept on a bed of straw. Cardinal Wolsey was to be tried for treason because he failed to secure the divorce between Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. Luckily for Wolsey he died before going on trial! Spoons were set on a table face down to “keep out the devil”. If the Lord invited you to dinner then you would probably be sitting at a table lower down than him so he could quite literally look down on you. You would have to wait until the Lord was served first before you were served and might even have to share your meal with one or two others! And of course you’d have to wait until a servant tasted the food. If they weren’t ill then it hadn’t been poisoned! Spinning was done nearly entirely by women to make clothing. Many single women were able to earn a living this way and this is where the term ‘Spinster’ (an unmarried woman) comes from. Henry VIII is crowned King at Westminster Abbey on 24th June 1509. Music was an important part of everyone’s lives. Sea captains would make room for orchestras on their small boats whilst King Henry VII never travelled without his harpists, trumpeters, fiddlers and pipers

We visited this pub as we were staying locally and had read the amazing reviews. From the outside it doesn’t look anything special but as soon as you open the door you feel genuinely welcomed. Super atmosphere, busy with locals and visitors alike. Staff very friendly and efficient plus the chef came and gave our dog a treat !! We went on a Thursday evening having not booked and thankfully there was a table. We were shown menus and told the specials on offer too . I had chicken stuffed with cranberry wrapped in bacon with seasonal vegetables, other half had steak & Stilton homemade pie with mash. Really delicious. For our desserts we had Apple & Blackberry Crumble with custard and a vanilla & caramel ice cream tart. The portion sizes are very good - you certainly know you’ve had a plentiful meal. We had a bottle of wine and a couple of soft drinks - it all came to £77 which I think was great value for what we received. We booked to return the next evening and the offerings where again excellent. I had steak with all the trimmings and husband has scampi . The landlady and all the staff made us feel welcome, it was great to hear the chat and laughter with barely a mobile phone in sight!! We will definitely return to this gem of a pub. Pity we weren’t staying longer as Sunday Roast sounded fabulous. I’m very envious of residents who live permanently in this beautiful part of England - endless beaches, cafes & walks plus The Tudor Tavern to round off your day. Perfect .

Such a lovely local pub near the seaside. We have been a number of times, whether it has been just for a pint, a big family meal 31st Dec, or most recently for a whole family event hiring out the back of the pub. The food is always delicious, proper English pub food. The atmosphere is so friendly as are the staff. It’s fantastic space out the back of the pub to hire for events / get togethers, with cover for unexpected British weather.

Booked for Sunday lunch based on excellent reviews but sadly disappointing. To start with there was no roast beef left, then all 4 roasts came out without cauliflower cheese (as stated on the menu). When we questioned this, they dolloped a spoonful of cauliflower cheese sauce on one of the roasts and apologised that there was sadly no cauliflower cheese left. So 3 roasts without cauliflower cheese and one with the dregs! The veggies of the group ordered a Mediterranean Wellington, which turned out to be an upside down mushroom, cheese and spinach pie disguised as a Mediterranean Wellington 🙈. One veggie hates mushroom and cheese so that didn’t go down well. Limited veg on the plates - basically they ran out of food by 4pm even though they serve food until 5pm. The staff were kind enough to deduct our bill but we won’t be visiting again.

TLDR - limited...
