We booked Amelia Hall for a special occasion (our friend Amelia’s birthday) partly because the name. From the start, things were looking promising. On arrival, we were warmly welcomed with a birthday card and even offered a complimentary welcome drink.
Up until ordering, everything was going well. Our first waitress reassured us that all pizzas could be made gluten-free. However, a short time later, helpful and honest waiter Keith stepped in to clarify that this unfortunately wasn’t the case our order of the carbonara pizza needed to be changed. Disappointing, but we appreciated the transparency.
Then began a bit of a comedy of errors, our drinks still hadn’t arrived by the time our pizzas did. We asked a few different staff members, and when the drinks eventually came, they were… wrong. We let them know, and the replacement sent was also..wrong. It felt like an unintentional game of drinks roulette but this was made up for in our bill.
Then we met Luke, the evening’s true MVP. He stepped in with calm, charm, and determination, and managed to turn the night around. Thanks to his efforts, the correct drinks finally arrived, woohoo!!
When it came to the food, the pizzas were excellent and served quickly. That said, the gluten-free base was more like a very thin cracker. A previous reviewer described it as similar to a roof tile, which, frankly, isn’t too far off. So in honour of Luke’s stellar service, we would like to formally recommend that he be sent on a fully expenses-paid trip to Italy to explore gluten-free pizza options firsthand. (We particularly recommend Gino Sorbillo’s)
Special thanks also to Keith, who contributed to ensuring that what could have been an awkward and disappointing birthday dinner turned into a night full of laughs, good food and...
Read moreWe had booked a table at Amelia Hall to celebrate a colleague's birthday and were looking forward to a relaxed evening with drinks. Unfortunately, our experience was quite disappointing — not because of the venue itself, which has a great atmosphere, but due to the poor service we received.
We arrived about 20 minutes late due to traffic, which we understand is not ideal, but we were still greeted warmly by the hostess who seated us — she was lovely and welcoming. However, the service quickly went downhill from there.
Our server, a young woman with red hair (I didn’t catch her name), was noticeably unfriendly from the outset. She seemed irritated taking our drink order and gave off the impression that she really didn’t want to be there. When our drinks arrived, one was missing. A member of our group went up to let her know, and instead of acknowledging the oversight politely, she snapped and told us “it’s coming” in a very curt and uncomfortable tone.
After that, she never returned to our table to ask if we wanted to order anything else or check on is.Eventually, we decided to just finish our drinks and leave, which was disappointing since we had planned to stay for a few hours.
When it came time to pay, one of us was paying by card while the rest were gathering cash to give her. The server saw the cash and snapped again, saying it was "card only," before walking off. No explanation. We then had to go up to the till ourselves to pay.
As someone who works in the service industry myself, I completely understand how demanding and stressful it can be, especially on a busy day. But being rude to customers — especially a group trying to celebrate — is never acceptable. Everyone has bad days, but basic courtesy shouldn’t...
Read moreVisited for a 30th birthday with a group of 14 people, and unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. We had pre-ordered, so we expected things to run smoothly, but there was nearly a 40-minute wait for food. The pizza was lovely, but those who ordered sandwiches said they were dry and lacked sauce. One order was missed entirely, and after asking multiple times, it finally arrived about 30 minutes later. I had specifically requested no cheese on the sandwich due to the person’s intolerance. Unfortunately, it was served with cheese. After notifying the staff, the sandwich was taken back, but it was clear that the cheese had simply been scraped off rather than remade. This is not acceptable, especially when a dietary intolerance is involved—even trace amounts can cause a reaction, and this kind of handling shows a lack of care and understanding.
We also had to ask for dips three times, and because we ended up asking two different staff members, more dips were brought out — and we were charged for them, even though we only requested the original amount.
When it came time to pay, we found out they don’t accept cash, and we weren’t informed when booking that the bill couldn’t be split. With 14 people, this made settling the bill unnecessarily difficult and stressful.
Overall, the service left a lot to be desired. While the pizza was good, the rest of the experience means I’m not in a rush to return as everyone in the...
