In all the very many reviews I've left on Social Media (most in glowing praise) I've never written anything remotely like this!
As an ex-Suttonian, I enjoy renewing my acquaintance with the Asian Grill when visiting friends in the area. So this is what we did on my latest visit back. It seemed strange to us when we arrived that there was absolutely no-one in the restaurant when we arrived - particularly as it was a Friday evening. Maybe our experience provided us with a clue why...
I'd eaten a meal in Birmingham with a client that same lunchtime, so only needed a snack, my friend needing a little more. So having explained this to the waiter, we ordered a cheese paneer, sag aloo, pilau rice, 3 popadums (all to share) and of course a Kingfisher each. So far, so good...
A little while later a different person (the manager?) arrived and instructed us to order a main course. Having explained that we'd already explained to his colleague that I'd already eaten that day, hence the order of a few small dishes only, he became surprisingly aggressive, snatched our drinks from us and ordered us to leave. In NO undertain terms!
Now if the policy is that spending £30 isn't sufficient, then there's ways of saying so. Even unfriendly would be almost understandable. But downright rude and aggressive? Totally uncalled for. Not surprisingly, we left, the restaurant returned to being devoid of customers, and insted enjoyed an excellent Chinese (meal!) at the other end of the HighStreet.
Not surprisingly, we won't be returning. At all. Not really an issue in terms of them earning income from me as I only eat there four or five times a year. To have alienated a complete local family who previously utilised the restaurant for both take-a-ways and sit in meals though does seem to be less than sensible?
As I say, never in all the years I've provided reviews have I left a review remotely like this. There again, I can't recall ever having had an experience like...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreMy Favourite Curry House In The World.
I have travelled across the world and UK trying all different types of curry. From the North of England to the South of England. From North India, South-East Asia, Africa and Australasia.
I have tried to find a better curry. Yet my tastebuds keep bringing me back to the Asian Grill.
Maybe itās because I have been going here for 15+ years now. But I would consider myself an avid curry lover (if there is such thing) and this still sits at the top of the list for me. I like to keep open minded about these things, and maybe one day the curry will be beaten, there are times when a curry has come close, but still not quite got it.
The service here is absolutely brilliant! As I say I have been visiting for 15+ years now since I was just a kid going with my parents and the staff really do make you feel at home from your first visit, over the years itās like visiting family it really is.
I highly recommend starting with the English Classic. Poppadoms with all the dips, and the Onion Bahjiās are like no other. They are to die for!
My personal favourite dishes are: Chicken Korma Chicken Pathia
Asian Grill curries I find are typically very sweet, but full and rich with flavour.
I am not usually a massive fan of the Pathia in other restaurants, but Asian Grills Pathia is not quite as spicy as normal, but full with a lot more flavour and tomatoey goodness!
As a bread, my favourite is the Peshwari Naan, they cook theirās without sultanas, which I do like, but seriously, you wonāt miss it, these may be the nicest breads you will try!
The atmosphere is always lively. On Saturdays it is just non stop. Be prepared to wait for 1 hour delivery on take-away, but normally a lot quicker for collection (about 20 minutes). Donāt worry though! It is totally worth the wait!
Please give them a go!...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreMy husband had a curry from here about a month ago and it was decent, so we thought why not try our loved classics. We cook Indian food at home and I thought about having a day off from cooking.
Well... we don't like leaving negative reviews, but sadly we will not be returning. Chicken tikka (red) tasted like eating chicken in a caramel sauce. Why oh why was there so much sugar or any sugar at all? Some pieces of chicken were also under. Chicken jeera was very bland and the saag bhaji was the worst we ever tasted. Tasted burnt and was very dry! The pilau rice was the only decent tasting. We don't like throwing food away, it's a crime really as some people starve, but sadly, most of it ended up being thrown away. Such a shame. We'll be back to our trusted Panache. They...
