The Mare Pool - JD Wetherspoon — Restaurant in Birmingham

My wife and I visited the Mare Pool for lunch after a trip in the City. As usual, the atmosphere was pleasant and we sat at a nice clean window table where we ordered two Panini sandwiches and two soups. We chose to have bottomless coffees for our drinks, but sadly the coffee machine decided to only half fill our cups with lukewarm coffee, but a second attempt produced a slightly warmer full portion drink. The food arrived in good time, and the Panini's appeared well cooked, although quite lacking in taste. Our soups however were tepid, and actually quite cold toward the bottom of the bowl, leading us to suspect that a quick blast in a microwave had been insufficient in reheating this offering. No one came to check if we were happy with our meal, and rather than complain, we decided to leave shortly after, as it was hardly worth the fuss. Overall, our experience was disappointing. We have regularly frequented the Mare Pool since it first opened, and from experience we know that the food and hot drinks can both be a little bit and miss in both quality and temperature. Been on numerous occasions before and food was nice, however today it was not the case. Starter and main arrived together to start with. The nachos were not nice. More like triangle pieces of card board with a measly amount of cheese and topped with a spoon of salsa and pepper. No jalapenos which was rather strange. We left both boles but servers didn't ask why! Mains arrived (again) and had to send them back. The chicken was tough all around the edges (clearly freezer burn). The waitress came back and said that the chef said "the chicken is chargrilled that's why it's brown". I'm no chef but for him to insult our intelligence with a lame excuse for badly cooked and stored chicken just showed what kind of chef they were! Just accept it's not done properly and make it again! It came back out no better than the first time. Chicken still tough as old boots (from freezer burn) and the halloumi now burnt. We went for drinks and food on Wednesday, 5th April 2023, about 8.25pm. We had 2 rounds of drinks, pleasant lady serving, then for the 3rd round, unfortunately we met very abnoxcious lady. We ordered large bacardi and , and we asked if hthcoke. , and ask if they sold zeros percent beers. She said Heineken, and other one, I said, may be Heineken, let me ask. By that time she hurriedly open the bottle without even giving a chance to decide. So I said he just wants a carling, she abruptly, ignorantly shouted and said you will have to pay for it. As I refused she became very very, lacking customer service experience, and we left without food and drink, their loss of income.
