This was my first time eating here and it was so disappointing.
The service here was terrible. The waiters seemed so much more interested to clear up tables than to serve us. Every single time we had to wave or I had to stand up in order to grab someone's attention.
We all wanted Coke for drinks but they only came served in bottles which weren't even chilled. I had asked for a glass with ice too and assumed the flick of the waiter's head meant that I would be getting this. Instead we didn't get those, we only received glasses after the straws they provided kept causing the Coke to overflow. There was an option to get Pepsi in a glass with ice which was cheaper, but we didn't want Pepsi and it's bizarre that Coke is omitted as a choice. This took a while to clean up because again, service was lacking and it took us a while to get someone's attention that we needed tissues and not more straws, which is what we were presented with.
The starters were good however I felt the Sultan Chops were quite bland. The coating was excessive and the meat was fair. No complaints about the chicken tikka or sheek kebabs, they tasted nice.
We ordered 2 main chicken dishes and one of them turned out to be lamb. I'm not sure how they managed to get this wrong but with the lack of service and poor attention to our table, it didn't seem surprising at this point. We didn't have any issues with eating lamb so we accepted it and didn't want to waste food so we did not bring this up to anyone.
Another point I wanted to mention - for a party of 3, the table we were allocated wasn't big enough for everything. There were more than a few times where I felt I could have tipped over my Coke bottle, or dropped my rice tray. This was caused by the lack of service to our table again, where the staff didn't seem to want to come over and help us clear some space for the incoming food. When they weren't serving us, all I saw them doing was clearing other tables which is strange they would prioritise those over us.
The Desi Chilli Handi Chicken was a bit too dry - this didn't allow the flavours to really come out and some of the chicken pieces had some chewy cartilage which I had to spit out onto my plate.
The Karahi Gosht Sultani (should have been Murgh Sultani) - this was okay as it was unexpected, however the ginger strips weren't a good idea to add - biting into one of these was as unpleasant as finding a cardamom seed in a curry. The lamb meat was soft enough that it wasn't chewy but nothing stood out to me in this dish.
Finally we decided to order 2 desserts to kind of clear away the taste of the average food we had. Again, we had to grab a waiter's attention to get the dessert menu even though we've been sitting immobile for a while. It took roughly 15-20 mins for the 2x single scoops of Vanilla Dream and Lemon Sorbet to arrive. I personally had the Lemon Sorbet which was good.
Overall, I would not come back to this restaurant. The service really killed my first time experience here. There were no checkups on us while we ate. The drink spillage was undoubtedly our fault but trying to communicate that we needed more tissues and glasses to pour our drinks into failed the first time when we were presented with more straws. The starter food was more enjoyable than the main dishes. We ordered 2 main dishes and one of them was the wrong one. Dessert took forever to arrive.
EDIT: I reduced my rating from 2 stars to 1 star as I had food poisoning the next day which forced me to call in sick to my job. I was fine on day 3 but neither myself nor my friends and family will ever set foot...
Read moreA few nights ago, my friends and I (a group of four) decided to book a table at Tipu Sultan – and honestly, from the moment we walked in, it was one of those experiences that stays with you.
My friend and I arrived first, and as soon as we entered, the staff welcomed us warmly and showed us to our table. We mentioned that our other two friends were still on the way, and they were completely accommodating. While we waited, they asked if we’d like to order drinks – which we did – and we also got papadums with a selection of dips. Let me tell you: do not skip the papadums and dips if you go. You get four luscious dips – a sweet mango chutney, a cooling yogurt sauce, a tangy onion dip, and a fiery spicy one. Each one added a different kick and flavour to the papadums, and we loved them.
One thing that stood out was how attentive the service was. I’m someone who loves ice in my drinks (probably too much), and I kept asking for more because it melts quickly – eventually, they brought over a small bucket of ice just for me. That kind of attention to detail really makes a difference.
When our other two friends arrived, they were brought straight to our table and seated right away. The staff gave us a few minutes before coming to take our order, which was perfect – no rush, but very efficient.
We ordered a lovely spread: • Butter chicken – we asked for it mild, and it came out a little on the sweet side, but it was still creamy and full of flavour. • Methi spinach curry with lamb – this was a favourite around the table. The combination of earthy methi (fenugreek) and tender lamb was spot on. • Lamb chops and a dish I hadn’t heard of before – chicken methi – were our starters. The chicken methi was especially beautiful. It came in cubes, cooked in this green herby sauce that was so different and fresh. A bit too spicy for me personally (I have a sensitive tongue and stomach), but even with that, I genuinely enjoyed it. • We paired everything with four kinds of naan and some pulao rice, which helped balance the richness of the dishes.
The portions were generous, and we had plenty of leftovers, which they packed up for us nicely. At the end of the meal, we were brought chocolates and hot wet wipes – small touches, but they really elevate the experience.
The bathrooms were clean and nicely maintained. Out of curiosity, we asked if we could have a peek at their function hall upstairs – and wow, it was stunning. Spacious, filled with natural light, and decorated with elegance. I could instantly imagine it as a dreamy venue for a wedding or birthday celebration. The entire building has a royal vibe to it – with lions, floral arrangements, statues, and even knights in armour dotted around. It’s grand, but not overdone.
Overall: If you’re looking for great food, warm service, and an atmosphere that feels both luxurious and inviting, Tipu Sultan is definitely worth a visit. We left full, happy, and already planning our...
Read moreA beautiful, spacious and family focused restaurant where the food and atmosphere go hand in hand. We came here onroute to Lake District. Large car park managed by steward coming in and out of car park. Car park has over 100 spaces. From the outside you can tell it’s a big venue and we weren’t wrong. The restaurant has 3 floor. The main restaurant on ground floor, a wedding and function hall on second floor and a prayer hall on the top floor. You are welcomed by a lovely desk staff at reception front who was very polite, cheerful and well dressed. The restaurant has a beautiful entrance grand stairs and chandeliers. The decor is very sultan style as with the name with cannons outside and armoured knights and elephants inside. The restaurant has many seating section as you walk in, private pods, family areas, couples tables and sections for larger groups. You pass the kitchen area where you can see the magic and prep taking place by chef and staff preparing the grill and other items. We were seated in a very nice circular table for the 5 of us very spacious. Waiter can gave us menu. The restaurant was packed full with families, groups and couples. You could tell this was a very popular place for a Friday night buzzing. Waiter came back after 15mins to take our order. We ordered a mix of food from curry, karahi, rice to nans. One thing I would say is waiters should know roughly how big dishes are and how many people it can cater for. They had a wide range of items from grill, curry, deserts and drinks. We told the staff we are going to pray and come back. The prayer room and toilets were clean and space for 50 people to pray at once. As soon as we got back drinks came quickly food took around half an hour to arrive which was average and good for a busy Friday night. Food looks beautiful well presented and smelled divine. The dishes were larger than expected and very generous portions. Food tasted fresh, warm, flavoured and tasted delicious. We couldn’t finish the food and had to be takeaway. Water is mineral bottle only. I would highly recommend this place if you are visiting or passing by Birmingham. We paid around £23 per person for meal and drink which was fair for the food, drink and experience. One recommendation I would make is to see some staff dressed like Tipu Sultan or those at front desk would give the place a...
