I want to start this off by saying I have been a fan of Oowee for about 5 years, going to the bristol and manchester location frequently, so I've seen alot of my fave items come and go (namely the shrimp fries), and unfortunately my latest visit a few days ago was a massive let down. I ordered the cluckin fries (one of my all time favourite vegan foods) and the gravy was awful. It was bland and a snotty texture which I just couldn't get over, it also looked like it had come out of a squeeze bottle rather than a ladle and it was luke warm (at best). This was so insanely disappointing, especially since I also ordered a side of gravy and I could tip the cup upside down without the gravy coming out. Considering how yummy those fries used to be, with an abundance of cheese and gravy, now its plain fries with a sprinkle of unmelted, hard cheese (which i think has also been changed recently?) and a slither of cold, squeezed on solid gravy. Not sure if theres been a recipe change but it tasted completely different - I understand with inflation and cost that the prices need to be on the higher side but I do expect quality to come with that, as a student I also don't have much money to spend on takeaways so its a big treat to go out for dinner with my partner and getting vegan junk food.
I feel bad leaving a negative review for a business I have enjoyed for such a long time, and I don't want to sound righteous, but it comes from a place of love. I personally think the menu is too big, doing too much, and focusing on specials/ presentation over quality. The gravy is one of the things that makes Oowee different from non-vegan places that offer vegan options- please focus on your USP rather than just trying to make the biggest 'dirtiest' burger that you can. I would also recommend you take new menu pictures since the chicken has also changed and the burgers look nothing like the pictures in store.
That being said, staff are always lovely and the chilli nuggets were really nice. Looking forward to hopefully seeing some changes and coming...
Read moreHad this for the first time tonight. Crazy prices. The food was alright - very nice chips. The chicken pieces are OK. Could use some extra spices in the mix as wasn't as tasty as others I have tried. The main let down was the insane cost of the food. Even for being in the middle of Bristol that was way over the top for what you're getting. By the time I had made my order and realised the price isn't for a 'meal' and just for a burger (chips being an extra fiver) I didn't want to then back out as we had gone out of our way specifically to go there and we were mad hungry after travelling. Unfortunately, this is the big reason I wouldn't go back. I can handle a burger that is 'just ok', it happens all the time. But paying almost a tenner for it (especially when you don't want all the extras - just the seitan burger and lettuce) with no chips or drink included? No.
Also - some health and safety issues with the flooring. Really greasy and slippery when it's been raining.
EDIT: In response to the owners comment below - no. We did not order dirty fries. We asked for enough PLAIN fries for 4 people, which turned out to be one box, because when I asked for 4 portions of fries they told me they only do the boxes. My total bill for four seitan plain burgers with no sauce and four portions worth of plain fries (one box) came to over 40 quid. Which is why I was so shocked. Which is why I won't be back. I gave a review as asked by Google after being there. If you don't like that then there isn't much I can say, but don't tell me my review is unfair and that I am exaggerating when I am the one that had to fork the cash over. I know how much it was. I know how much I got for it and I am simply saying that for me it wasn't worth the price...
