Having heard many excellent reviews about the latest incarnation of The Commercial, we had high expectations of the Sunday lunch.
The new decor is very nicely done. The covid hygiene provisions are reasonable with distanced tables and face mask requirements.
We ordered drinks and Sunday dinner--1 pork belly and 1 lamb shank- within a minute of being seated. Staff were attentive and polite.
The dinner arrived looking very attractive (see photo) however, it left us feeling underwhelmed.
The lamb shank was tasty, though a little crispy on the outside with less fat rendered than I would expect from a slow cooked portion. The veg was nice, though 1 half of a carrot, 1 half parsnip and 1 piece of broccoli (so if you like a lot of veg, you may want to ask for an additional side). The meal was let down for me by an over-salted gravy. My partner who had the pork belly agreed that the salt levels were on the high side.
This did not stop me from eating the food, but did diminish the pleasure somewhat. When I mentioned this as general feedback whilst paying the bill the (I think assistant manager) was apologetic and advised that if I had raised it during the meal, they would have made me a different gravy which was very nice to hear. The staff were very good throughout.
I did not drink, but my partner had an ale of the same that he had been drinking in a different establishment prior to eating and found the quality quite poor, so much so he didn't finish it. (a very unusual situation!)
The table next to us were overheard commenting that they found the portion size small, though I did not have an issue with.
Overall the place looks very nice and the staff are great, but the food was not as amazing as I expected having heard...
Read moreA very strange pub. To start off with the name? It's like calling an insurance company the nag's Head!. If you're coming in from the A52 then prepare to be confused; you either miss the place or clout a keep left bollard and end up driving through the wall and arriving at the bar which probably isn't a bad idea as at least you catch the attention of the bar staff. (Ok it's hyperbole) If you do manage to actually get into the car park then good luck navigating around the two huge planters going right across the centre or missing the wooden furniture seemingly designed to impede cars being parked in the first place. If you're going to worry about your car being bashed in the car park, then at least you'll be able to sit down in the "lounge" with a pint of beer or cocktail and with shoe repair kit while trying to fix your silver stilettoes that the cobblestones and gravel have divided into fractions. The inside is like a 1970s esque chain pub eater that time or the budget or both forgot. Complete with balustrades in solid oak that wouldn't be out of place in The "Munsters"!. That first impression out of the way it's quite cheery place with some good food and good beer and seemingly very pet friendly as there were loads of dogs who were most welcome as long as they kept their owners under control particularly near closing time. To come to Beeston without a visit to the "Commercial" would be like going to London and missing the tower. You would be robbing yourself of a lifetime of after dinner anecdotes. It's a...
Read moreWe played in the function room at a private party last week. Great place - classy decor with opulent, vintage vibes and quirky industrial detailing that works beautifully. Great space for an intimate gathering.
The food was some of the best I've had in it's class (and we eat a LOT all over the country playing at functions every weekend! 😄). Tasted home made and with good quality ingredients, rather than the mass produced, tasteless processed stuff that you often get these days, and a good selection of hot and cold options from wings and samosas to hummus and quiche - delish! They even parcels up the left overs for guests to take lovely little cardboard labelled boxes, which was a thoughtful touch (the sausage rolls and quiche I took home were yummy! 😍)
Staff were very friendly and chatty. I'd definitely pay a visit if in the area again. Can't comment on the drinks, I was drinking water all night!...
