It has taken almost two years - lockdown and all that - for us to find a restaurant that makes us feel like we have a small part of London in Sowerby Bridge of all places. Great service, ridiculously good taste, and superb quality… 🍱 If I could give this place 6 stars, I would. Ate all the food before we could snap a photograph!! Lovely atmosphere. We sat in front of the kitchen, bit too close to the door, but was interesting to watch the kitchen staff. If I could nick-pick on anything from a business perspective, it would be seeing the cooks browse their mobile phones here and there whilst in between service - but that is being really fussy! We were not offered a wine menu and the paper napkins are a small letdown. But being super fussy as I was so impressed by the place, I want it to be even better! The table staff were excellent. We ordered 10+ dishes for 2 adults and one child. Two drinks each = £90. An absolute bargain. Wish I could have sampled all the plates… I will be coming back many times! (April 2023) Returned again with my 11 year old son for an Easter treat. We love it there. The pork belly, anchovies and chorizo are lovely. The cauliflower dish was lovely - great for vegetarians - but not for me. Heart and Soul (Vocation) on tap 🍺 too. Parking 🅿️ immediately outside if anyone needs to know.

So, I was so looking forward to eating here as I'd heard such good things. Sadly, my experience was not a good one at all. I ordered cauliflower and manchego croquettes ( they were more like little balls) which were ok, but the overly sweet sauce really spoiled it. The balance of flavours were all wrong in my opinion. Anyhow, I then had the braised beef cheeks (one of my favourite things to eat!), but again, they disappointed 😞. There were only 3 small pieces of meat in the dish, and I could only eat 2 of them. The third piece was kinda 'tough', not pleasant to eat, so I left it on my plate. The sauce was rather 'tangy', a bit on the acidic side. I was expecting a more deep, rich sauce which it certainly was not. Then again, it's only my personal expectation that it didn't live up to. The manager/ head/ front of house guy, was really lovely. He appolgised for the tough cheek, and consequently removed it from my bill. Very good customer service, and it was the right thing to do to be honest. Would I go again? Probably not. It's a real shame, and I really mean that, but I'm not confident I'd be impressed enough by the food they serve. The wine is decent though, and not overpriced 👍

Fantastic! .Took a chance on getting a table at lunch after two failed evening attempts (fully booked and just turned up). This is a very well presented eatery, the staff were lovely from greeting to goodbye, our waitress introduced their menu and specials, explained how our food would arrive and how many was a good number (three per person but best to share). When I said my partner liked nothing hotter than a korma, she took the time to vet all our choices and where possible provided the hot bit as a separate side. Drinks both soft, tea, coffee and plenty stronger, I ordered a very nice latte, with a mammoth block of dark chocolate. All the cooking is done in plain view with a large oven and flaming grills. I've taken a shot of each dish, though after the first two, I wanted to just taste them, fresh, hot and save the photo for next time!

UPDATED *

We've been back to Engine since my last review and the meal & service were exceptional! I've updated my score to reflect this and I'll we'll definitely be back.

Faultless!

OLD REVIEW *

I've got mixed feelings for Engine as they get so many things right. The atmosphere is excellent and the furnishings are great but a couple of niggles take away a star from the rating, unfortunately.

The food was good but not spectacular, as many others have called it. A couple of the dishes were outstanding (sweet potatoes & feta and the cod & ox cheek in lentils) but others were rather bland, particularly the albondigas. Of course, out party only got to try 10 or so dishes out of the entire menu so I'm sure there were some other excellent dishes in there too.

The other issue was the service. The staff were lovely and attentive and the problem wasn't with the team but the way the food was brought out. The dishes came out in stages, which is understandable and common for most tapas restaurants, but the problem is that they brought dishes out for some people and not others so a couple of the party were sat there without any food for 10 or 15 minutes while the others were eating. They should ensure all of the party have dishes delivered at the same time. They also forgot 2 dishes so we ended up asking for them to be taken off the bill rather than wait.

All in all, it was good value and an enjoyable meal, just not as impressive...
