The breakfast here was wonderful as was the cake I got to takeaway. The gent that served us was very nice and made us feel welcome. I came with my two small dogs (one of which is a 16 week old pup) who are very friendly and lovely girls who sat very quietly and well behaved while we ate. Unfortunately I was afterwards made to feel very uncomfortable when my exited pup let out a harmless bark (which is how dogs communicate right?) to one of the customers that arrived with a toddler who seemed to be friends with the owner. I was very rudely spoken to by the lady owner/worker to “tell my dog not to bark as he is scaring the child”. I did tell my dog who was in no way being aggressive just excited but was made to feel really bad and uncomfortable for something that was in no way abnormal or rude behaviour from myself or my dogs. This is NOT dog friendly behaviour and my dogs are well behaved. If they don’t want normal dog behaviour that should not welcome them in and claim to be dog friendly or move the area they seat dogs. My dogs are harmless and love all people. The way I was treated was upsetting and embarrassing. It’s such a shame as I really enjoyed my breakfast, the cafe and the lovely man that served us. This bothered and upset me a bit so I decided to leave this...
Read moreI can't comment on the food as we left. We spotted this cafe whilst on a detour backpacking the Pennine Way. We were delighted to smell fresh coffee and what looked like excellent cakes on a Sunday morning and an unoccupied, unreserved, sunlit window seat. As we started to sit down we were "asked" not to sit there, could we use the backroom. We surveyed the dismal prospect and decided to walk on to Gibson Mill.
We said cheerio on the way out and were informed by someone who presented as the owner that "We're a dog friendly cafe and that table is reserved for people with dogs and we can't have dogs in the backroom". Enough said. I'll never darken their door again. Gibson Mill at Hardcastle Craggs, is excellent and works on the age old principle for walk in establishments of first come,...
Read moreWe made multiple visits to this friendly and nicely decorated tearoom during a recent stay in the gem of a village that is Heptonstall. We enjoyed tasty breakfast sandwiches on some mornings and on other visits tried a number of the absolutely delicious cakes and tray bakes (taking more away for treats on walks too). The ginger cheesecake is exceptional and the Biscof version not far behind, the tiffin similarly delicious. If we understood correctly, all the sweet treats are made by the owners, this perhaps explains the quality.
The staff were always friendly and welcoming making for an all-round lovely experience. Next time I'm sure we'll try something from the large range of take and cook at home meals too, they sound great! We are happy to heartily...
