⭐ Updated Review for Gail’s – The Grafton Centre, Cambridge
I used to rate this Gail’s location highly, but after around ten visits at different times, I’ve noticed a steady decline that’s hard to ignore.
👥 Staffing & Service There’s often a noticeable shortage of staff, which affects both speed and attentiveness. The team does what they can, but the overall experience feels understaffed and underwhelming.
🥐 Reduced Selection The display is consistently reduced—by at least 25% compared to other Gail’s branches. For a bakery known for variety, this feels like a letdown.
🍳 Missing Menu Items My favourite item, the baked eggs, is still listed on the menu but has never been available at this location—not once in the last few nonths. If it’s not offered here, why advertise it? It creates confusion and disappointment.
💸 Premium Prices, Diminished Value Gail’s isn’t cheap—and that’s fine when the quality and options justify the price. But when the selection is limited, the service stretched, and even basics like serviettes downgraded, it starts to feel like corners are being cut. Case in point: I ordered a cheese croissant expecting a warm, melty breakfast item. It was served cold, and I was told it couldn’t be heated. For the price, that’s just not good enough.
Details Matter Even the serviettes have changed—thinner and lower quality than before. It’s a small thing, but it adds to the sense that this branch isn’t keeping up with Gail’s usual standards.
💬 Final Thoughts Gail’s has always stood out for its charm and quality, but this branch feels like it’s slipping. I genuinely hope it’s a temporary phase and that the Grafton Centre location returns to the standard that made it special.

Not often give out such high scores however this place really deserves the full 4 stars if not more. Food is beautiful, the cinnamon buns are amazing and all cakes taste wonderful. The only reason it doesn't get the 5 stars it is because it is slightly overpriced. So if 2 people have a coffee a couple of buns and perhaps a 1/2 a focaccia the bill will easily be over £20. I will make it clear this is not a restaurant, it is a coffee bar. Nevertheless highly...
Read moreMy last review was written a few years ago, but I wanted to confirm after a thorough investigation: Gail's is definitely the best bakery in town. There are several very good Italian coffee/bakery places, but the sourdough bread at Gail's is definitely much better. You find Gail's bakery products in several places in town, e.g. in Waitrose, where it is a highly popular bread (nothing left later in the day). At Gail's they understood that the days of the soggy white 'old British' soft bread are gone, and people want the sourdough bread for all occasions, from toast, to croutons, to plain sandwich. Their range of sourdoughs is broad, and the bread is really well made. I wish they have commercial success without loss if the present quality. The shop at the entrance to Grafton Centre sells all their breads, but also has a wide range of pastry, sandwiches, pies, and even carb-free salads: everything that goes with tea or coffee. Again, have to commend the quality: the chicken and porcini mushroom pie was divine, and the mini-sandwich with salmon and salty avocado butter too. The atmosphere is also great: the simple clean furniture, the airy high ceilings, and the stuff still happy and helpful even at the end of the day. A great positive energy, not your usual Starbucks... I hope the business rates won't kill this business: it's worth having them for a long time. I am glad their prices are at the high end - they do a great job and should not be selling...
