My last review was written a few years ago, but I wanted to confirm after a thorough investigation: Gail's is definitely the best bakery in town. There are several very good Italian coffee/bakery places, but the sourdough bread at Gail's is definitely much better. ------ You find Gail's bakery products in several places in town, e.g. in Waitrose, where it is a highly popular bread (nothing left later in the day). At Gail's they understood that the days of the soggy white 'old British' soft bread are gone, and people want the sourdough bread for all occasions, from toast, to croutons, to plain sandwich. Their range of sourdoughs is broad, and the bread is really well made. I wish they have commercial success without loss if the present quality. The shop at the entrance to Grafton Centre sells all their breads, but also has a wide range of pastry, sandwiches, pies, and even carb-free salads: everything that goes with tea or coffee. Again, have to commend the quality: the chicken and porcini mushroom pie was divine, and the mini-sandwich with salmon and salty avocado butter too. The atmosphere is also great: the simple clean furniture, the airy high ceilings, and the stuff still happy and helpful even at the end of the day. A great positive energy, not your usual Starbucks... I hope the business rates won't kill this business: it's worth having them for a long time. I am glad their prices are at the high end - they do a great job and should not be selling it for cheap.

At Gail's, you're in for a culinary treat. With its cozy ambiance, attentive service, and mouthwatering dishes, this restaurant sets the stage for a delightful dining experience. As you step inside, friendly staff greet you warmly, ready to guide you through their diverse menu. From comforting classics to innovative creations, there's something to suit every palate. Every dish at Gail's is crafted with care, using the finest seasonal ingredients and expertly sourced proteins. Whether you're digging into a hearty pasta, enjoying a juicy steak, or relishing a fresh salad, the flavors are exceptional. And let's talk about the service. It's top-notch. The staff goes above and beyond to ensure you have a memorable time, from quick drink refills to catering to any dietary needs. In a nutshell, Gail's offers not just great food, but a fantastic dining experience overall. Whether you're here for a romantic dinner or a casual get-together with friends, you're in for a treat.

Most like it Cold? Attracted by the food at the counter therefore walked in like the majority did. But have been in this cafe less than 5 times. Why? Because it's too over priced. The sandwich and pastries looked genuinely nice. Requested for heating when trying to eat in but failed. The cafe insisted to serve everything in room temperature. No heating service even it charges you more for eating in the cafe. Why? The cafe is too cold inside. Personally I prefer a more warm and cosy environment. Not a cafe with cold bakery products and cold environment. But still, it's a relatively clean environment. The food are standard, better say, no surprise nor disappointment. I know it's very highly rated in Cambridge town centre, but different people have different taste. Most like it Cold I guess. Please don't take my review too hard. Everyone has different taste. No one in this world can win everyone's approval. As it's always some like it hot.

⭐ Updated Review for Gail’s – The Grafton Centre, Cambridge

I used to rate this Gail’s location highly, but after around ten visits at different times, I’ve noticed a steady decline that’s hard to ignore.

👥 Staffing & Service There’s often a noticeable shortage of staff, which affects both speed and attentiveness. The team does what they can, but the overall experience feels understaffed and underwhelming.

🥐 Reduced Selection The display is consistently reduced—by at least 25% compared to other Gail’s branches. For a bakery known for variety, this feels like a letdown.

🍳 Missing Menu Items My favourite item, the baked eggs, is still listed on the menu but has never been available at this location—not once in the last few nonths. If it’s not offered here, why advertise it? It creates confusion and disappointment.

💸 Premium Prices, Diminished Value Gail’s isn’t cheap—and that’s fine when the quality and options justify the price. But when the selection is limited, the service stretched, and even basics like serviettes downgraded, it starts to feel like corners are being cut. Case in point: I ordered a cheese croissant expecting a warm, melty breakfast item. It was served cold, and I was told it couldn’t be heated. For the price, that’s just not good enough.

Details Matter Even the serviettes have changed—thinner and lower quality than before. It’s a small thing, but it adds to the sense that this branch isn’t keeping up with Gail’s usual standards.

💬 Final Thoughts Gail’s has always stood out for its charm and quality, but this branch feels like it’s slipping. I genuinely hope it’s a temporary phase and that the Grafton Centre location returns to the standard that made it special.

Not often give out such high scores however this place really deserves the full 4 stars if not more. Food is beautiful, the cinnamon buns are amazing and all cakes taste wonderful. The only reason it doesn't get the 5 stars it is because it is slightly overpriced. So if 2 people have a coffee a couple of buns and perhaps a 1/2 a focaccia the bill will easily be over £20. I will make it clear this is not a restaurant, it is a coffee bar. Nevertheless highly...
