We had a lovely Sunday lunch at The Parrot in Canterbury a couple of times now. It's a really charming pub with a great atmosphere. We like a proper Sunday roast, and The Parrot definitely delivers.
I had the roast beef, which was cooked perfectly, and my wife opted for the vegetarian roast, which she said was delicious. Both our roasts came with generous portions of crispy roast potatoes, a big Yorkshire pudding, and a medley of fresh vegetables. The gravy was really tasty, too – just what you want with a roast.
What really impressed us was how accommodating and friendly they were with our son. He's a bit of a fussy eater, wont eat potatoes of any shape or kind, and even though it wasn't on the kids' menu they were happy to swap his potatoes for a big Yorkshire pudding. He was thrilled! It's little touches like that that make a big difference when you're eating out with kids. The staff were all really friendly and attentive, making us feel really welcome.
I also love the story behind the name "The Parrot." Apparently, the building dates back to the 14th century and has had a few different names over the years. It's a nice touch that they've incorporated some of its history into the pub's identity. It also turns out that, until recently, the pub actually had a resident parrot who would often entertain the patrons! It really added to the quirky charm of the place.
Overall, we had a fantastic Sunday lunch at The Parrot. The food was delicious, the service was excellent, and it's a great place for families. We'll definitely be back!
We came back, New menu but...
Read moreFood was lovely except I asked my waiter Keegan about the statrer I was looking at as it mentioned chillis, which I am allergic to. Does the dish have fresh chilli in it all as I can't eat fresh chili or is it dried chilli, which I am fine with. Leave it with me I will check with the kitchen. He came back said there are no fresh chilli in dish just a little spicy. So we ordered, the dish came up, I ate some of the food only to find there were fresh chilli in the dish. Thankfully I didn't eat any of the chilli. I brought it up with staff politely to be advised they would make staff aware. On bringing it up with the waiter i placed order with, before paying the bill, there was no apology and i was told it was "on me " as I didn't mention the word allergy. I am a very calm person, never quick to kick off especially as my son is a chef. All I wanted was an apology as I could have been very ill had I not noticed the chilli in the food. Absolutely disgusted with his attitude, arrogant and cocky . Had it been different this would not have been posted, all I wanted was a apology . I am 58 and never ever put a negative review for any restaurant, pub or hotel ever . Shows how upset I am when my son is in hospitality for me...
Read moreI used to visit the pub regularly when it was Simple Simon's and absolutely loved it. I have many good memories there and came back a few months ago for a reunion.
My husband is in a wheelchair after suffering from an ischemic stroke and both he and my daughter are type 1 diabetics. I was in the middle of helping him with a small can of cola as he was having a severe hypoglycemic episode and a member of staff came along and basically went off that we couldn't have drinks there that we didn't buy there. When I explained to him what was wrong, he was dismissive and took up an attitude stating in a rather irritated tone "Okay, whatever, well I didn't know" before walking away. It left myself and several other people feeling pretty upset as the explanation plus the glucose meter and test strips ETC. should have been a clue.
We don't expect everybody to know what diabetes is but when someone is explaining they they're treating a medical emergency, don't roll your eyes at them because you don't believe that cola can...
