Fringe and Ginge in Canterbury is a must-visit coffee shop that truly stands out. Their flat whites are smooth and velvety, with a perfect balance of espresso strength and creamy milk, while their mochas deliver a rich, chocolatey flavor that blends harmoniously with the coffee’s bold notes. Both drinks are topped with expert latte art, showcasing the baristas’ skill and attention to detail.

The selection of bakery items is equally impressive, featuring freshly baked pastries, cakes, and other sweet treats that are hard to resist. Whether you’re in the mood for a buttery croissant or a decadent slice of cake, the quality is always top-notch.

The staff contribute significantly to the café’s appeal. They’re super friendly, engaging, and incredibly efficient, managing the steady stream of customers with a smile. It’s easy to see why Fringe and Ginge is a local favorite—the place is often packed, creating a vibrant, bustling atmosphere. The only downside is the limited seating inside, which can fill up quickly, so it might be best to arrive early or grab a takeaway.

Adding to its charm, the café is dog-friendly, welcoming four-legged companions with open arms. This small touch makes it a wonderful spot for dog owners looking to relax with a quality cup of coffee in a lively, community-oriented setting. Highly recommended for anyone looking to experience some of the best coffee and baked goods Canterbury...

I think I fell in love with this little cozy Coffee shop! The girls who worked there when we came were lovely. The place inside si small but a lot of natural light comes in so you don't really feel suffocated and there are outdoors benches and tiny tables. I took a Chai Latte and my boyfriend took a Long Black. We added a bag of coffee from their little shop, because it was a very interesting blend. The lady asked us if we wanted the beans grounded and then proceeded asking for what purpose was the coffee(to get the best grounding level). I found it very professional. The Chai is made with a mixed powder a little spiced. I usually don't take Chai when it's a powder because it comes out very sweet but this was one of the best Chai Latte I've ever had. So if you are like me, don't worry about taking this one, even if it's in powder!! The spices blended so well with the taste. And my partner was happy with the taste of his coffee too.

Extra bonus for the...

We dropped by on a hot summer day and the iced latte was just the ticket to help us relax and unwind. We sat inside and it was refreshing to see it was a laptop free coffee shop as well.

Anyway, the iced latte they offer is of a very high standard as was my americano. A lot of love goes into their craft and the drinks that they offer are noticeably better than many independent coffee shops.

What really made this a special trip for me was the jalapeno cornbread. I'd just had lunch but knew I had to try this, it didn't disappoint. Toasted, with lime butter, it was heavenly. I would have skipped lunch if I'd known and just tried everything else on the menu as well.

This is a destination stop, I will be returning and I would 100% recommend it to anyone...

11 things to see, eat + do in Canterbury - save this for your next visit to Kent! If you’re looking for a day trip from London idea or an overnight stay - you’ve come to the right place. Bonus is, the direct train is less than an hour away from London! (ad)

1) Visit The Goods Shed
Right next to Canterbury West, it’s a daily farmer’s market with fresh produce, cheese and wine shops, deli, restaurant and a wine bar. One of my highlights of the visit!
2) See Westgate Towers - it has a viewpoint, a museum and even an escape room inside

3) Stroll past The Old Weaver’s House, a 16th century building now turned into a pan-European restaurant!

4) Peek at The Ducking Stool or even go punting on a river tour!

5) Enjoy coffee and pastries at Fringe + Ginge! Lovely team, brilliant coffee and a great spot to people watch from

6) Walk around the nearby area to see The Crooked House and other independent shops (including an Oboe Specialist one!)

7) Marvel at Canterbury Cathedral, it’s free to walk around but tickets cost £14 for adults to go inside

8) Have Japanese food at family restaurant Happy Samurai - highly recommend booking if you fancy a visit as it gets very busy during peak times

9) Stay overnight at Falstaff, it’s right in the centre of town, a 4 minute walk from the train station and is housed in a 15th century building

10) Pop downstairs to the hotel bar for the best drinks in town! Great selection of cocktails!

11) Have a delicious brunch at The Refectory Kitchen before you go, my favourite meal of the visit. You HAVE to get the Refectory Brunch (and the hot sauce). The portions are huge!
