I have just read a review on here that I take exception to and Lyle is completely out of order for leaving such a negative review when it is he and his partner who are in the wrong and leaving an unfair and inaccurate review. The Jolly Brewmaster is a peaceful community pub that caters for locals, CAMRA enthusiasts and cider lovers. The garden is not child friendly and there was clearly the regular sign up at the bar saying 'children are welcome if seated or accompanied by an adult at all times'. We were in the garden at the same time as Lyle, his partner and his child on Sunday afternoon. Having been asked politely to clear up his child's plastic blocks that were spread throughout the middle of the garden in the thoroughfare to the back tables as the pub is quite correctly 'not a creche' (their child was away from them playing in the shrubbery at the time) the management referred to was told to 'jog on' repeatedly in an increasingly aggressive manner with both he and her becoming very agitated. As a Jolly Brew regular I would not only NOT want to see anyone speaking to ANYONE in the pub in this aggressive manner, (we are here to enjoy a peaceful hidden treasure of a drinking establishment) the fact that someone has spoken to the management in this tone and think that not only that is alright but that they can go ahead being so much in the wrong and then leave a negative review for them whilst being in the wrong, regarding a superb small local business... it really makes me wonder! Lyle I hope you reflect on your comments and remove your erroneous and incorrect review. I would then remove mine. There are things that are fair and there are some things...
Read moreFirst visit to Cheltenham and fell in love. Walked across town to visit this pub, which we had been told was one of the best real ale pubs in Cheltenham. On arrival, great atmosphere and log fire burning! Seemed perfect. Got to the rounded bar with an array of ales, ipas, bitters, porters and cider. Oh what to choose? I however ended up buying a hoppy ale which was not to my liking...at all. Real shame. If I was able to try what I was drinking, I’d have enjoyed my beverage and given this place the thumbs up, and bought one after the other. The rather obnoxious landlord decided to reach across the bar to tell the lovely, helpful bar guy that after 2 tasters, that was quite enough. I was gobsmacked. Obviously from our young appeal, the assumption was that we were only in for as much free beer as possible. I was quite frankly disgusted and felt rather sorry for the poor bar guy to have to embrassly tell us that ‘my boss says you can’t have any more’, after 2!!! How can anyone buy a drink without knowing what it tastes like. I wouldn’t buy shoes without trying them on. Same rule applies. For a CAMRA associated pub, I was unimpressed, disgusted and made to feel uncomfortable. We supped up and left. I’d rather give my money to someone else. If you want to drink nice beer and chat with friendly staff, and importantly try what your buying, then go to Sandford Park Ale House at the end of the high...
Read moreArguably Cheltenham's No.1 Real Ale House, The Jolly Brewmaster is tucked away off the Suffolk Road area of Cheltenham in what is largely a residential area. Unpreposessing from the outside... what lies within is a fairly unpreposessing interior, albeit very cosy with plenty of seating... and standing space. But that's not why you are here. Behind the very democratic circular bar is a top class range of perfectly curated and served home and guest ales... far too many to list or remember here... but you won't be disappointed. They have a small but interesting range of wines too... by the glass or by the bottle. Outside at the rear of the premises is a rather magical rambling garden with seating... and dining space (Sorry... I"d forgotten to mention they do great food here too! ) for at least 50 people...(and well behaved dogs) Die hard customers can be found in the nooks and crannies of the garden year round, braving the elements under a single bar electric heater! Join them... It's...
