Short version: great looking place for a drink (good selection of beers and nice list of cheap shots) and maybe watching sports, not so good for everything else.
Long version: we booked a deal from Groupon - 2 pizzas, 2 drinks, an hour for the game of pool. The place looks awesome, the garden, the terrace, the inside, really chilled atmosphere, it seemed awesome. We decided to get the food first and then play. We ordered one pizza with beef and pepperoni and the other with tomatoes and chilli. We waited over 30min and eventually went to ask for the food. They were just about to cut it. A few minutes later we received the first pizza that had tomatoes, chilli and beef. We were also informed that our second pizza was dropped on the floor so they have to make it all over again. Since my boyfriend doesn't eat meat he rushed to the kitchen to ask them to not put any on the second pizza - we decided not to return the first one, just make sure the other one will be for him. Another ten minutes later, the second pizza came. It had pepperoni and beef. The waitress just told us "it was already in the oven when you came with the request". We ended up sliding meat from one slice to another so that he could actually at least eat some of it. The pizza itself also wasn't the best, quite soggy and burnt at the edge. When we came down to play pool, both tables were taken, so we gave up on the game that we had granted with the voucher and just left. We should've probably started with pool and then eat but who would've thought we'd end up waiting almost an hour for the pizzas and not even get what we ordered.
Altogether quite disappointed. Won't go back for pizza, for sure. Might go back for a beer in the garden one day, although I'll probably think twice...
Read moreWe went for a Sunday lunch and the quality of what we ordered was mixed. There were some starters/small plates they didn’t have available, eg the battered sausages, but what we ordered, Camembert bites and mac and cheese bites, tasted great (even if the salad on the side was a bit wilted) and the portion sizes were pretty good too.
The mains were a bit disappointing though. The chips were fine, but the buns for the burgers and hot dogs tasted very stale. There was very little cheese on the burgers, and the bacon was tough and salty. The burger and vegetarian patty were ok although over cooked. The sausage in the hot dog was a bit too salty. I do feel it wouldn’t take much for the food to taste considerably better though, eg fresher buns, a bit more cheese, cooked for a bit less time. So we might just have been unlucky. Therefore I’d be willing to give it another try another time. Also to highlight, the menu on the table was different to the menu on their website (not sure if it was a lunchtime thing or if the website just wasn’t up to date), there were less of the chippy stuff like fish and chips, but there is still a decent variety, including for vegetarians and vegans.
Otherwise, while service was a bit slow (they have a groupon offer just now, and we weren’t the only ones taking advantage of it, so I imagine that may have made them busier than normal for Sunday lunch) the staff were friendly. The venue itself was fine. It has things like pool tables and a large tv, and a great outdoor space too. I think it’s the kind of place that’s best for when you just want to go out with friends for good value drinks and snacks (eg sharing a bunch of ‘small plates’) rather than a...
Read moreHorrendous first impression due to one of the rudest door supervisors I've ever come across.
My friends and I chose to visit Bar 50 last night for a quick drink. We made our way through the outdoor area and entered through the door. I was first inside and spotted a door supervisor sat on a table and said hello and recieved no response. The last of our group entered and forgot to close the door behind him which prompted to the Door Supervisor to jump up and shout at him. I apologised on my friends behalf and we went on to the bar area.
On reflection, this interaction has left a sour taste in my mouth. As a door supervisor, there is a huge emphasis on engaging with your customers and creating a welcoming atmosphere. This Door Supervisor fell well short of what I would want if I were the venue manager. The fact that we walked in and were polite and friendly should have, at the very least been mirrored by the Door Supervisor, as opposed to shouting at us for making a simple mistake.
The fact that I've given 2 stars is purely reflected by the young lady behind the bar who was the polar opposite in her approach and was exactly what you'd hope for as a member of...
