I don't really tend to write bad reviews often but in this case I feel it's warranted. We came along for the Christmas lunch only to be told on arrival that because we hadn't pre ordered some of the items weren't available. Disappointing because it wasn't very clear that a pre order was required from their website (we discovered later it's at the bottom of their Christmas page but not part of the booking system. We also rescheduled by a day and at no point did anyone tell us, even though we were in communication with the bar that we needed to or should pre order). After the initial disappointment we decided to not let it dampened what was supposed to be a special day out for me and my family. The starters were actually very tasty but they took a long time to arrive. The mains then took an even longer time to arrive by which point we had to cancel our desserts because we had another booking elsewhere that we were going to be late for. It took 2 hours and 40 minutes from arrival to main courses being served and unfortunately the main courses left a lot to be desired. The steaks were overcooked and the other mains did not come with what was described on the menu. A description of confit garlic mash became some crushed boiled potatoes and promises from the menu of Christmas veg and sides for the table never materialised. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive and also apologetic and I'm very grateful for her trying to rectify the situation but unfortunately it ruined what was supposed to be a nice day out. I'm sure this place is a lovely pub and does good pub food but if you're offering up a special Christmas menu and can't deliver on that then I'm afraid you probably shouldn't be offering it, not to mention that it's at the same price point as some other very good restaurants in the area. Only reason I'm giving 2 stars is...

In our trip to Edinburgh we went a few times to the Barony and ordered food/drinks for many pounds. We enjoyed it there. After we eated somewhere else we just wanted to do one more drink in the Barony.

But what happened was one of the most weird things that has overcome us. The bartender refused to serve because he said we had too much. I told him in clear language that it was a misunderstanding.

I told him that he was shaking and looking insecure and that its not necessaire to do this. The waiteres who he overruled to do this looked very unhappy with his behaviour.

He stand with his decision as if his ego could not reconsider it. We definitly were not drunk. We leaved the place to never come back. It was a shame to not treat us with the respect we showed this places as customers.

To the man who did this: think about your behaviour and please don’t do stupid things like this again. It...

Went for a meal. I had the steak and instead of chips i asked for roast potatoes. I asked for medium rare for the steak and when the meal arrived I was so disappointed. The steak was tiny, very thin and cooked within an inch of its life, the onion rings looked they had been reheated so many times when you bit into one the just powdered away and no onions in them. The roast potatoes were microwaved as they just collapsed when your fork went into them. The meal was so bad I called the server across and explained how bad the meal was and that I would not be eating it. Charging £24 for this they really need to get a grip. They took away my plate and said I would not be charged. I will never return to this place for food again it’s that bad. I would definitely recommend...

The Chicken Liver Parfait Yorkshire pudding is chef’s kiss Love it so so much! Had a chill afternoon walk with my sister and stopped by for a quick bite and a drink. To our surprise, the Yorkshire pudding was amazing. Then, we ordered the Camembert cheese as well. It tasted amazing also! Just out of curiosity, saw an official picture published by the bar itself, the Camembert doesn’t come with butter. It is served with a pot of red onion chutney and another pot that reminds me of running honey. Also, on the menu it says it comes with hot honey. However, when asked, the very friendly staff said the honey should be only top of the Camembert. Regardless, it is tasty! One picture below was took by us and the other one is released by the bar.

Such an underwhelming meal - was looking forward to nice pink beef like the pictures seen on google for this bar. The menu was described really well with rosemary potatoes & proper gravy. We got a meal that was reminiscent of school dinners, reheated cold overcooked beef with aunt bessie’s roast potatoes & Yorkshire puddings, bisto gravy & hard undercooked broccoli & soft overcooked carrots. I would not have minded if they hadn’t oversold it and advertised had pictures that truly reflected the food they serve. However, we narrowed this place down from lots in Edinburgh and quite frankly it takes the p. Don’t know if there’s been a recent turnover in staff, but can’t see how the food we were served would ever warrant 4+ stars.

Not your sterotypical local pub. Looks like a typical pub from the outside, but just a wee bit more upscale decor inside. The patrons looked more like local couples grabbing a pint or tea than typical pub regulars. Prices are about the same as a typical pub, but while the food is typical pub fare, it is also more upscale. The chips aren't thick, but thinner skin-on and perfectly fried. The peas that came with the fish and chips weren't sad little green pebbles, but wonderfully flavoured and accessorized with tasty radish slices. We had a romantic table in the corner by a window and would definitely reserve it for a special date night.
