🍦 Bun & Scoop – Decent Gelato, But Not Very Memorable ❄️

Stopped by Bun & Scoop for a quick gelato during lunch, and while it wasn’t bad, it didn’t quite leave a lasting impression.

🍨 Gelato Taste: The flavors were fine, but lacked the rich creaminess and depth that you’d expect from a top-tier gelateria. I tried a couple of flavors and found them pleasant but not outstanding – the kind of taste that’s okay for a sweet treat, but nothing I’d go out of my way for again.

🪑 Atmosphere: The place itself is nicely set up and cozy. It’s clean, bright, and a good spot to sit down for a short break in the middle of the day.

👨‍🍳 Service: Staff were polite and quick, although not particularly engaging. The service was efficient, which worked well for a casual lunch stop.

✅ Overall: Bun & Scoop offers a decent gelato experience, especially if you’re nearby and looking for something cold and sweet. But if you’re a gelato enthusiast looking for something truly rich and artisanal, you might want to explore other...

Worth the trip away from the immediate ice cream shops outside the castle on Royal Mile.

We made a divert just to visit due to other reviews. It did take us down (fortunately for us) a set of long steps just off of the Rpyal Mile. However, it was worth the detour.

Price was reasonable for fresh, made on the premises Gelato ice cream. Range of flavours was lovely.....and even had a few chunks of the flavour mixed in.

The only slight negative was that the only vegan option was sorbet.......not quite the same, especially if you're an ice cream loving 2 year old. Fortunately, a little share of our ice creams didn't upset her tummy too much.

It was at the quieter end of the day so the restaurant side of things was closed, but it allowed us to grab a seat inside and enjoy a relaxing and fresh cooling ice cream.

Especially what was needed and of course promised to our little one after...

Had a work emergency and was looking for a place to have a quick coffee and sit half an hour with my laptop. I went in, asked if they had wifi, and asked if it was all right for me to do this.

The person said yes, but after I ordered my coffee and sat, he said wifi might not be very good. It was actually non existent: internet didn’t work at all.

I quickly left to find another spot to work, and asked for a refund of the coffee I wasn’t able to drink, which they kindly gave me. The place looked very nice and the coffee did as well even if I didn’t have time to taste it, so this would have been a 5 star review if the other person behind the counter hadn’t mistreated me for going there “just for wifi”.

My dearest: if this was a problem for you, you could have just told me when I respectfully asked before sitting down, and I would have gladly found another...

Stopped in here as we fancied some ice cream despite it being a freezing cold day! The girls were very friendly and the ice cream was tasty (almost too authentic tasting coffee flavour, I was expecting more of a vanilla latte style ie sweet rather than quite an unsweet strong flavour but I should have asked for a taster. Also the chocolate chip could have had more chocolate in but again it was tasty so it didn't matter too much). £6.50 for 2 medium sized scoops did feel a bit tight but I suppose it's local artisan ice cream made in Edinburgh so probably a reasonable price to charge. It was quiet which may have explained the quite cold/uncosy atmosphere and I did find having the radio on with lots of adverts rather an unusual choice for background music. I would visit again but mostly as there didn't seem to be much choice for ice cream in the Old Town.

Highly recommended. I’ve tried a bunch of other Edinburgh ice cream shops with good ratings, and I’d say this one’s the best as far as execution goes. I had White Chocolate, Dark Chocolate, Cinnamon, and Caramel Whisky, and they were all amazing. The texture is great, and the flavors are stronger and more true to what they’re supposed to be than in other shops I went to. The flavors available when I was there were all fairly straightforward (and there were 12 or 14 in total, I think), so the only knock would be that there aren’t any wildly inventive ones yet (except for Caramel Whisky and you also rarely see Gianduja). But I was told those are coming, too, and since the execution of the current ones is pretty much flawless, I’d for sure put this place very high on Edinburgh’s ice cream shop list.

Just visited Bun & scoop, I tried their Affogato with vanilla ice cream and my sisters tried different scoops : passion fruit or summer fruit something and toblerone, hazelnut and naugat icecream. It was all good and yum! It was my first time trying an affogato, was okayishh but felt the coffee shot was a little bit too strong for me I guess! They got a fabulous selection of flavours in ice creams and sorbets, savoury menu is amazing, great variety of breakfast and brunch options. The cafe is amazingly maintained, clean and tidy. The barista and staff is just superb, recommended some of their signature items which were all 10/10. Give it a try if you are around the castle. Its just on the bottom of the cockburn street.
