Very mixed review so bare with me : greeted by a young lady which explained the rules of the COVID and the one way system to which we as customers comply too. However the rules seem to not apply to the chefs who walk where ever they want on the route out to have a smoke over the road which you can smell on them when they walk past you. Moving onto the food, very nice I must say however the Gammon either needs more time on the grill OR needs to be cut in more thinner portions as it was the most chewy gammon I’ve ever had. Also perhaps a nice touch would be to hand out steak knifes with the gammon or steak dishes. It is unbelievably difficult with a standard dinner knife. With this being said, I WOULD still recommend eating here and giving them a go. I go all over the country eating out and reviewing so I only give my most upfront honesty.

I visited Edinburgh over New Year's where we ended up in the Malt Shovel Inn on one of our first days there. We immediately loved the atmosphere and the very polite staff. Even though we wanted to explore the city, we came back multiple times to eat here. The food we had was extremely delicious. The fish and chips was very good and I had one of the best burgers I've ever tasted in my life. We did have to wait a while for our food, but that was understandable, as it was extremely busy over the holidays. The very hospitable staff also made up for any inconveniences. They had a variety of beers to choose from and we found that the staff were more than happy to help us decide which beer we wanted. They were even helpful in deciding which non-alcoholic drinks we could choose. All in all a very enjoyable experience which I highly recommend.

Very cool place! The best Haggis in town!! Actually it was my first time ever trying haggis, so I don’t have a lot to compare it to, but it was delicious. It was a special that day and it was deep fried with a whiskey sauce. Very tasty. I also had the fish and chips and the tartar sauce was something I have never had before it was so tangy and tart. I guess it must be the way a real tartar sauce tastes, back home in the US I have never really liked it much but now I know why, just delicious. Their local beer is flat just FYI kind of weird in the beginning. Very very good.

Sorry for not explaining my review straight away in case you want to improve. Here my reasons: -Mac and cheese were in my opinion overpriced for the size of the portion. -My husbands chicken wings were not really seasoned, just naked wings with a bit of sauce on it, and quiet a small amount of sauce. -there was a TV which just showed random stuff like news(no sound), just pictures which I honestly don’t want to see (and guess what they are saying) during a visit at a pub to have a nice afternoon. I rather have no TV at all, as it always takes at least a bit of attention whatever it shows(attention away from your time with the ones you are there with). I get it that you should just ignore it, but for some people that might be harder than for others. If you choose a pub to watch sports it’s a different story. -One more thing, but that is apparently in whole Edinburgh the case, is the lack of any none alcoholic beer on tap. We didn’t find one pub during our visit, and we looked at a few. You would think in 2025 pubs also in Edinburgh would start getting one none alcoholic choice on tap. And on tap makes a big difference to a can or bottle!

I want to point out that it was not as bad as it first might sound and I’m sorry for this, the pub itself seems quiet nice and if it wouldn’t be for the points above I think we could have had a good time. And I changed it to 3 stars now, as 2 would have been really harsh, sorry for that! I hope that all makes sense and...

Nestled on a bustling pedestrian street, this charming little pub exudes an inviting Scottish atmosphere that immediately captivates visitors.

I ventured in with my two nephews, eager to sample a selection of local delicacies. We ordered an assortment of favorites, including the crispy Haggis Fritters, the savory Scotchegg, and a generous portion of chips (fries, as we Americans call them). I requested a drizzle of rich gravy, and the kitchen happily obliged. Trust me, that gravy truly brings the dish together in a delightful way.

Our food arrived promptly, and I was pleasantly surprised by its enticing presentation. The Haggis Fritters, served as a light appetizer with two pieces, were perfectly crisp on the outside, their delicate flavor enhanced by a luscious Whisky Sauce that complemented them beautifully. The Scotchegg was another highlight-each egg was encased in a golden-brown crust, with the sausage lining being tender and flavorful. Finally, the chips were fried to perfection, golden and crispy, while the warm gravy acted as a comforting blanket on top, elevating them to a whole new level of deliciousness.

The staff was friendly and attentive, ensuring our experience was pleasant throughout.

This is exactly the kind of picturesque Scottish pub I had envisioned, especially on a...

This happened 2 years ago but I still think about it and upsets me so I thought I would finally write a review especially after seeing Simona's review below.

I was meant to be meeting someone for the first time on a date outside the station, I was early and it started torrential raining. There was literally a river running down the street. So I thought I would go into the pub for a small white wine to take cover and calm my nerves. I was asked for ID and unfortunately I did not have any on me. I apologised and asked for just for a coke instead and the bar lady told me that I could no longer be on the premises for not having ID when asked and she directed me to the door - back out into the rain.

I know you have the right to ask me to leave premises but for someone who obviously isnt there to get drunk - it was midday, I ordered a small class of wine, I couldnt look more innocent if i tried and I obviously just wanted to get out the rain AND obviously over 18 (I was 25, now 27). I can't see any law which requires you have to order me off the premises so I just think the bar lady must be simply get a buzz by being able to do this sort of thing. You could of atleast offered me the shelter until the rain calmed, I was going to be a...
