We went on a Sunday at the back of 5pm. We booked in advance. The staff were friendly and helpful. We started with the Lentil Soup and the Tempura King Prawns. My wife's Lentil Soup was served in a large bowl and she loved it. It came with 2 slices of nice bloomer bread. I had the Tempura King Prawns served with sweet chilli sauce. I absolutely loved the 5 King Prawns. The sweet chili sauce was not too sweet, but had a nice little kick. My wife had the Scampi and I had the Haddock for our mains. We had a side of Onion Rings to go with it. My Wifes Scampi was really nice. 9 large plump breaded scampi with a portion of mushy peas and a large portion of chips. My Haddock was nice. The flesh was white and clearly fresh. The batter was underdone for me and could have been a lot crispier, but was still really nice. The chips were really good as was the onion rings. We were going to have a pudding. But we were full and would not have managed it. Disapointing as I wanted to try a deep fried mars bar for the first time. Even though we stay 15 miles from where it was invented and never tried it. With a Pint of Fanta Lemon, a Coke Zero and a pint of Birra Moretti came to £55.95 it was good value. We will go back to City Restaurant, next time at Festival Theatre.

The City Restaurant is an Edinburgh institution. A sit-in chip in the middle of the city, they have been serving up delicious chip shop favourites and more for longer than I can remember On the menu are the usual fish and chips, pizzas, and burgers you can normally find in most chip shops. With some other tasty treats thrown in, too. The menu is stacked with all manner of different dishes, and it may take you a little while to decide on exactly what you want!! Our table of 5 ordered some haggis bon bons for a starter. Then fish and chips, chicken and chips, and a pizza. All the food went down a storm with us. It was all piping hot and served up quickly. The Staff are all very friendly and happy to serve food with a smile The restaurant can be found next door to The Festival Theatre. So if you are in town for a theatre trip it's the most convenient place to enjoy some pre show dinner. I'd recommend this place to anyone who likes traditional chippy food aswell as burgers and pizzas Top quality tasty food at great prices

Visited this restaurant for a Monday evening meal. The restaurant was suggested by a native of Edinburgh & we went for the classic home comforts Scottish/UK meal experience - Haggis, Neeps & Tatties and Fish & Chips. We ordered the Breaded Haddock which was one of the tastiest & least oily fish & chips that we have had. In other restaurants, we have had a few bad experiences with fish drowned in oil & forgettable chips, but this was a pleasant experience. The haggis was grainy, chunky, not very smooth & the quantity was a little less compared to the turnips & mashed potatoes. But the star attraction of the H, N & T was the whisky sauce which elevated the dish to a new dimension. Good service & ambience too. Satisfied customers! They also serve burgers, pizzas, pastas, salads and their breakfast spread looks tempting, will try it the next time we are in the city.

Can be busy so good to book ahead. Not enough serving staff at times especially when they have a lot of customers in and trying to take everyone's orders and retrieving dished from kitchen and pouring drinks. Rushed to order take drinks order before sat down this is a cheaky ploy to get you to buy more drinks as all gone by time food finally arrives... tea/coffee all stone cold. Food even though would think made to order is often reheated and rubbery. Fish cakes tough as old boots and when finally manage to get through iron plating crumb coating dry as a bone inside. Complained when were able to get someone's attention, no one came to check how our meal was.... taken away meanwhile rest of party told to eat not let theirs get any colder than it already was. New cakes brought still dry in middle but nothing other than a try these offered as an apology. No offer to refresh tea or money off despite rest of table now finished eating. Shared chips around so they weren't all just sitting watching me chew my way through the fishcakes and kids had some ice cream on order. Daughter had to go up to bar to ask for more drinks and the icecream as no one was paying attention. We keep coming back here when visiting Festival. Third time unlucky with the fish cakes. Fish is okay a decent size but can be greasy and lasagne just a massive slab of lasagne no salad garlic bread etc. Chips are good and ice cream. Not masses for...

Absolutely fantastic everything! The City Restaurant is one of the best restaurants in Edinburgh for simple but delicious and affordable food. Menu offers great choices from many breakfasts (served all day), lunch and dinner. From delicious pastas, fish to (my favourite) one and only the best burgers. I mean it! I've been in City Restaurant many times and my order is usually one of the many choices of burgers. They are sooo good every time! Forget the KFC or McDonald's where for £5 you got soggy bun and dry thin burger inside. From City Restaurant you'll have big crispy brioche bun with many layers of salads and double size of perfectly cooked beef burger, of course comes with big portion of fries and all this for average only £9. Except great food you'll also experience very friendly and professional service from mostly all Polish team working in restaurant. Waiting staff will take good care of you while chefs will prepare delicious meal in short average 10-15 minutes waiting time. I can't recommend enough about this place. It's great for anyone, couples, families and also big parties where you can have whole another dinning room upstairs for yourself with advanced booking of course. Highly recommended restaurant to anyone and anytime from...
