We used to eat a lot at this restaurant, just after it changed hands from Xanadu. The new owner was brilliant, so professional and helpful, the food always brilliant. Fast forward a few years to today’s meal. It really couldn’t be an experience further from the ones we used to have. The service was not good at all, despite an embarrassing plethora of staff stood around by the bar. My order came out wrong not once but twice, and only came out because my husband asked where it was when everyone else had nearly eaten their food. We were told they forgot. When it came out wrong a second time, ridiculously spicy to the point of inedible, I was told patronisingly by the Indian female member of staff “Indian food is spicy you know”. No shhh Sherlock. That’s why I had a rogan Josh the night before at another restaurant in Edinburgh (a better one) and have eaten in various Indian and Asian eateries my whole life, my mother being Khmer. I do not expect an embarrassing lecture at a table from someone who cannot get an order right twice. A chap who I assume to be the manager removed the meal from our bill despite the Indian female server saying she wouldn’t. I had to threaten non payment of the bill before she did anything. In the meantime, the young female server decided it was a good time to stand in the kitchen and make comments and giggle. Unsurprisingly about right for this place now. Unfortunately a lick of pink paint and some garlands and wall hangings don’t make up for the poor service, inedible food and a sleep decline in standards. I cannot believe I even have to leave this review as we have loved Gautams for years but I will never set foot in there again nor would I recommend it to anyone.

What an incredible experience…. I can not recommend this place to you highly enough I recommend it to you unreservedly! From the moment you step in through the door you are instantly captured & carried away into an experience like no other. Having had food from Nepal before and in particular the Ghurka community down south in Surrey & Sussex I was extremely excited to stumble upon this & sample the cultural dishes again. Lauren was kind, welcoming, approachable knowledgeable, all heart & made the experience even more memorable! Her recommendations of dishes were spot on. The food is delicious, rich & full of flavour & the portion sizes are more than substantial The quality of the lamb on the bone was the best lamb shank I’ve had in my life The owner made us feel so special as we walked in & every part of the service was wonderful… Ps. Do not be worried about spice or heat - try and dish be adventurous & ask them to adjust your spice level if you need it Thank you - can not wait to come again when we are next here! This amazing restaurant welcomed our group of 28 people on very short notice and we couldn’t have spent a better night. The service was crazy efficient, we got our plates super fast and the food was wonderful, we all loved it. I ordered a lamb chetinad and I won’t lie by telling you it was made from heaven. Actually, it was probably the best Indian food I’ve ever eaten ! We all loved the naans, it was a first try for a lot of people in our group and they adored it. We were astonished by the quality of the service and the kindness of the team working there. You guys were so nice and so welcoming making the atmosphere super heartwarming for all of us. I know having a big group of people like us can be challenging but you made it look so easy and you did an amazing job. I couldn’t recommend you more ! Thank you so much for everything, we won’t forget you and I will definitely come back whenever I’m travelling to Edinburgh ! Greetings from the French people !

Booked in advance and needed to put our credit card details down as they’ll charge a fee for no show - fair enough. We were greeted with a smile, service was friendly and attentive, even the bartender came over to check on us. Food-wise: amazing!!! For starters we had the King prawn. This dish was good but nothing to write home about. The main course though, was awesome. We had butter chicken and lamb shank from the Signature menu. Butter chicken was on the sweeter side however very flavourful. Lamb shank had such a great depth of flavour and was a great pair with the garlic naan. The meat came straight off the bone and was very tender. Highly recommended. Decent portion size, we actually couldn’t finish everything and needed to pack some home. We also ordered a bottle of wine and mango lassi hence the high price. If you don’t drink, the pricing for food was well worth.

Absolutely brilliant dinner. One of the best Indian restaurants we have ever been to. Our waitress, Lauren, was brilliant. Polite, friendly and attentive without being annoying. We wanted to try something different so Lauren gave us some recommendations and they were brilliant. We had the Rajas Nihari Gohst (a lamb shank curry) and the chicken karahai. Both were absolutely delicious. Spicy but not over-powering and full of so much flavour. The beer was good and my wife really enjoyed her cocktail. The restaurant has been fairly recently updated and looks great. Toilets were clean and the rest of the staff were all great as well. Prices were reasonable for what was exceptional food and generous portion sizes. Don't really have anything bad to say, actually we're wondering whether to go back there before we go home!
