As a Chinese person, I'm quite pernickety about 'authentic' Chinese food. I've found it quite difficult to really give my seal of approval for a lot of Chinese takeaway and sit-in restaurants around Edinburgh, only because dishes have been changed so much to suit local preferences. Red Box is one place that since I was recommended by a friend to try it out, I absolutely love to visit to satisfy my Asian food cravings and often recommend friends to go here.

When you walk through the door, you peruse the menu wall on the left side and choose your noodle, meat (optional), vegetables, sauce and any condiments. The great thing about this restaurant is they actually serve Asian noodles and also have real Hong Kong street foods (like wor tiep) as well as Westernised dishes (prawn toast) to suit both Chinese and Western palates. I can never get enough...

Fast, fresh and tasty. I don't tend to hang out on the Southside much outside August so this was a rare treat. My friend had a voucher to use up and we were looking for somewhere to eat pre-theatre. Perfect! It's like Subway for noodles. You pick your noodle (I went for rice noodles), then your main ingredient (chicken), your veg (carrots, sugar snap peas and water chestnut), your sauce (singapore powder) and any toppings (spring onion). In the meal deal you also get a starter (we had chilli squid and dumplings between us), and a beer or soft drink (beer, naturally). There was chilli oil and soy sauce available for extra seasoning, and a jug of water to help yourself. It was server up super fast and was delicious. Highly recommend, will be ideal for between shows for festival goers. Noodles didn't come in red boxes though. They are missing a...

Red Box is an excellent noodle bar. You can customise your noodle box from the type of noodles you would like, the type of meat, veg or tofu and the sauce you'd like it to be cooked it. It's then prepared fresh before your eyes and arrives at your table piping hot.

Their starters are as good as the noodles- on my last visit I sampled their salt and chilli squid and it's the best I've had in a long time.

The service is always friendly and fast and it's a great place to grab a good bite to eat if you're short on time. It's my favourite place to grab food on the run during the August Festival although it does get very busy during this time so you might have to wait a little longer. It is...

Just had my dinner here yesterday, I ordered ramen with beef and choose pak choy, mushroom and carrot for vegetables with malaysian chili. It was really nice, they cooked it very fast, and only cost me £7.70 Basically u need to pick your noodle, meat/seafood, 3 vegetables and the sauce. It is near Edinburgh University. Update: If you can handle spicy food, try the rice with beef black pepper sauce, so good. They always cook with very sttong fire, you should choose veggies that is quite hard like broccoli (my personal preference)

Overall, it’s a nice noodle bar which can offer value for money. But, one thing about stir-fried noodle is that the dish is too watery. When the bowl came, I was confused that am I ordered for the soup based??? There was too many water at the base of the bowl. I pretty sure I ordered for the stir fry and expected it would be dried and savory. I would give 4 stars if they fixed the watery noodle for stir fried.

Pros: - Quite cheap for what you get in quality and quantity. - Quick service - Lots of options - good gyozas! Cons: - the beef in the noodles was bad quality, I had a bit then threw out the rest and just ate the noodles and veggies - the chicken skewer didn’t come on a skewer ? And it wasn’t the best chicken, but still edible. - fortune cookies smelled so bad (plastic, processed)
