Prepare for a culinary journey to Vietnam right in the heart of Edinburgh! Saigon Memoir is an absolute gem, and our recent visit was nothing short of a five-star experience. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was inviting, and the service was both attentive and incredibly kind. Our server made us feel genuinely welcome, offering thoughtful recommendations and ensuring our dining experience was perfect. Now, let's talk about the food – it's simply outstanding. We started with the fantastic pork and seafood spring rolls, which were perfectly crispy, bursting with flavour, and clearly made with fresh ingredients. They set a high bar for the rest of the meal, and Saigon Memoir delivered! For our main courses, the pork chop curry was a revelation – tender, flavourful, and with a wonderfully balanced curry sauce that left us wanting more. Equally impressive was the crispy chicken thigh curry, featuring succulent chicken with a delightful crunch, all bathed in another exquisite curry. Saigon Memoir offers authentic Vietnamese cuisine executed with precision and passion. Every dish felt like a true taste of Vietnam. Read moreNothing remotely authentic about this place, for either the Vietnamese food or the Chinese food. It was barely edible. We got the siu lung bao, which looked like they’d come straight out of a packet from frozen section of any Chinese supermarket. The wonton noodles were just weird, soup felt like it was made from a packet mix, the noodles were just non-descript, the “wonton” were not shrimp but pork and didn’t taste too fresh, oh dear. Two bowls of noodles and the dumplings came to £46 - for a meal that I reckon cost about £5 to make or for the ingredients anyway. I wouldn’t have minded if it was not authentic if it had tasted good, but it didn’t. For good noodles in Edinburgh, go to Noodles Home next to Surgeons Hall, Vietnam House in Haymarket or even Maki & Ramen which is a chain but good. Plenty of other places but will mention these here as standouts. Was hoping to add this place to the list but will avoid...
Read moreA delightful surprise in Edinburgh!
Before heading home to the south of Scotland, I made a spontaneous stop for an early lunch at a Vietnamese restaurant right across from Waverley Station—and I’m so glad I did.
I showed up 20 minutes before opening (11:40am), and they kindly welcomed me in and started service early—what a lovely gesture! The hospitality was matched by truly authentic and delicious food.
I ordered the veggie fried spring rolls—perfectly crispy with a light, thin wrap that was easy to bite into. And the pho? It arrived with the broth served in a teapot! I’ve never seen that before, but it was brilliant—keeping the broth piping hot so you can enjoy it throughout the meal. A smart and thoughtful touch.
Great service, flavorful dishes, and warm hospitality. I’ll definitely be back next time I’m...
