Just recently dined here by myself last night and the food was truly incredible! The ambience and atmosphere of the restaurant was spectacular and I was well taken care of by the extremely friendly hostess at the front. The food was fantastic and I highly recommend!
Some feedback though: The rest of the service was not quite on par for me last night. There were several occasions where I would sit with empty plates, no water, and no drink for well over ten minutes. The first few times didn’t necessarily bother me until I saw how other tables that were sat after me got served all their food and were checked in on and helped much faster than I was even when we had the same waiter. There were even other waiters that noticed and would check on me for him…yikes. He stated that it was his first day of work after coming back from vacation so I didn’t dock the overall rating for this restaurant because of this but…maybe…being more attentive would have been great? It actually genuinely got frustrating at points. Given the other reviews claiming great service, I am assuming this was an off-night. I was also celebrating a special occasion and was quite underwhelmed. Everyone here in the reviews received cool complimentary desserts or cool cocktails and…I just didn’t get a whole lot of that. Was disappointed in that regard, I didn’t really feel celebrated at all. :(
For the food review: I ordered from their evening set menu (which I hope is something they continue into next year! Truly a lovely and more budget friendly way to eat at a nice restaurant). I first got their prawn crisps which came with a flavorful chili sauce. I recommend these as they are tasty and have a nice crunch to them. I ordered the duck spring rolls as a starter which I certainly recommend. Duck can be hard to cook and can come out slightly chewy but I did not have that issue here. The dipping sauce was the perfect combination with the taste and feel of the duck.
For entrees and sides, I ordered the BBQ chicken with a side of Chinese green beans and the fried eggs noodles. The BBQ chicken was actually not as expected but in a good way! I expected a classic sticky, sweet Asian inspired bbq chicken but instead I got lots of smoky, peppery and chipotle-like flavors which I enjoyed! It was savory and hit the spot! The egg noodles were also tasty but not as notable as other food I ordered. The green beans certainly wowed me however. I was almost hesitant to order them as…they are green beans…I did not think that green beans could be quite that good! Essentially…eat your veggies and order the green beans from here! Very good!
I did also order the Eastern Dragon cocktail which was a whopping £16 pounds. You are pretty much only paying for presentation. I was underwhelmed by this drink. It is small, the flavor is…meh. I actually regret spending that much money on that drink. Not sure why it is so popular beyond just the way it is served (which is cool and flashy don’t get me wrong). But if you want to pay for a drink and actually enjoy it, get something else. If you want everyone to stare at you because they unveil it on a lightened stand with fog, then yes…buy it. I don’t recommend however.
The desserts though…truly excellent! They are rich and packed with such wonderful flavors that work so well together! I tried the chocolate pagoda AND the sticky pear toffee pudding. I recommend both highly. The chocolate pagoda was my favorite for sure. I will be coming back just for...
Read moreA Must Go unforgettable experience! This Birthday dinner was an unforgettable one for all the right reasons! This was one of the best meals in Edinburgh we would say! The staff, the food, The Decor! It was an incredible night.
Starting with the decor, in my pictures below, was beautiful it was absolutely magnificent in the restaurant, the first thing you see when you walk in is the ceiling, well, you can't actually see the ceiling as it is completely covered with cherry blossom trees which is just stunning! I also loved the Japan esque decor (as I assume).
The servers were lovely especially our main server Vaseem who took care of most of our meal and kept coming back to check on us making us feel very welcome.
The Food!
Chilli salt baby squid were incredible but also incredibly spicy! The sweet chilli sauce was not just spicy but had a great taste to it and was perfectly sweet at the same time! They arrived garnished with togarashi spice and an assortment of small veggies.
Crispy duck spring rolls were incredible they came wrapped with a bowl of hoisin sauce. They had a lovely fluffy pastry outside and a warm, moist inside. The duck was also shredded to perfection and quite soft.
The Salt and pepper Aubergine had a crisp tempura batter with a velvety soft interior, they arrived with a tangy cherry hoisin dipping sauce garnished with a beautiful flower and were arranged as a Jenga tower like fashion.
Surf and turf shumai are a perfect end to that set of dim sum and small plates although, the 'dim sum' weren't typical soft white doughy but I didn't mind as they were perfect and I couldn't have asked for more. The surf was a sticky red prawn on top with a small chive garnish which was a nice addition to, what I thought, was the main of the meal - the Turf of short rib, it was the perfect balance of savoury and sweet and was probably my favourite starter!
Starting off with one of my favourite mains... The Chinese BBQ Chicken! It was cooked to perfection and melts in your mouth probably on of the best cooked chicken meals I've ever had I just can't get over it! It came with pickled cucumber, chilli and sweet soy sauce and a lime
Next another one of my favourites (to be honest most of them were!) The black pepper and honey ribs, they had an incredible balance of chilli and honey, and I don't like ribs that much usually and they are something I stay away from but these I would probably order every time I go there because they were all succulent meat and NOTHING else! They were probably in the top 2 of what I ate today.
Also something exceptional that stood out was the complete dish of white miso salmon, I don't think I could ask for any more out of a dish like this! It was sweet, with a delicate finish in taste and texture a complete, perfect dish.
Yet another great dish was the Thai style Monkfish - a stunning crispy batter with a buttery soft fresh piece of Monkfish inside. The beautiful Jenga esque style garnished with lime, shallots and lemongrass. A must get dish!
The sides or the plates we chose from the 'Rice, Noodle & Vegetables' section were the X.O. Fried Rice and the Special Fried Sweet Potato. Both great accompaniments to the mains I especially like she X.O. Fried rice, the potatos were just good they weren't incredible but they were good
This was a dinner we wouldn't forget and would definitely go back and definitely recommend that...

Rating: 1/5 (because 0 isn’t possible)
I’ve eaten at plenty of restaurants around the world—some bad, some mediocre, and some truly special—but Tattu Edinburgh is by far one of the worst dining experiences I’ve ever had. It’s not just overpriced—it’s a blatant scam. What they serve is not Chinese food. It’s generic, low-quality dishes slathered in sugary sauces, dressed up in fancy descriptions, and presented in a nice interior to fool you into thinking it’s gourmet. Don’t fall for it.
Our bill came to £221.34 for two people. That’s with a mandatory 12.5% service charge—which is audacious, considering the service was rushed, unhelpful, and frankly rude. The staff seemed more interested in upselling than actually serving us.
Examples of their deception and culinary crimes:
We were casually asked if we wanted “some shrimp chips to start”—sounded complimentary or minor. Turns out that meant £11 for a few stale rice crisps you could buy at any Asian grocery for 99p.
The cocktail we ordered (billed as high-end and elaborate) tasted like a half-glass of pineapple juice. It cost £35. Yes, £35 for juice in a fancy glass.
The "Sesame salad" was just bland coleslaw, no sesame, no flavor. And that was £10.
The “Sticky Pork Belly” was described as slow-cooked with Chinese flavors. What arrived was dry, oven-roasted pork in a cheap BBQ sauce—£15 for something worse than pub food.
The beans (meant to be garlicky and savory) were drowned in sugar and burnt garlic—absolutely inedible at £10 for a tiny portion.
The seafood clay pot was supposed to be in a ginger-spring onion broth. What we got was four frozen shrimp, a few bites of rubbery fish, and a pool of sickly-sweet soy syrup—£28 for something that would be unacceptable in a food court.
The pepper beef was the least offensive dish, but still drowned in some unmentioned sauce that made it a weird, cloying mess. £32, and we didn’t finish it.
The fried noodles were such a disaster—broken into tiny 2–3cm pieces, flavorless, soggy—we sent them back. Even the white rice was undercooked and sticky in the worst way. It’s literally shocking how badly they managed to screw up plain rice.
Scallops? We got two tiny ones, drowning in their terrible pre-made XO sauce—£16.
Oh—and £5.25 for a bottle of water. In Edinburgh. Laughable.
Every single item was grossly misrepresented on the menu. Not one thing we ate matched the flavors or descriptions. If this place used honest language, it would read more like: “Cheap ingredients, sugary sauces, aggressively upsold, ludicrously overpriced.”
They are not a high-end restaurant. They are a high-end con.
This place is a masterclass in style over substance. Flashy decor, Instagram bait cocktails, and zero culinary integrity. It’s food for people who don’t actually like or understand Chinese cuisine.
I wouldn’t recommend this place to my worst enemy. Save yourself. Literally any other Chinese restaurant in Edinburgh will be a better experience and 1/10th the cost.
Tattu Edinburgh is a scam. Avoid it...
