It supposes to be one of the best place in the city to eat nachos and burritos, the plates from the pictures look nice but than when you try them you will be really disappointed, bad quality food and service even worse because they don't care about your complains. Place to avoid in Edinburgh NOT RACCOMENDED AT ALL!! To these kind and professional people who want only save their face in the net I respond again. They said we had already eaten the 95 % of the place, which is totally wrong cosiderating that the 50% of the plate was only jalapenos ( AS YOU CAN SEE IN THE PHOTO) but anyway this is not the point, everyone can prepare the food how they prefer . The point is, my dear friend that when we orderd the plate we clearly specified that we dont eat spicy and of course we didnt know because nobody said us that the plate was only jalapenos, so in this case is your mistake and your fault that you didnt notice about it knowing our request. So, considerating this I think I had all the rights to ask you a replacement of the plate ( AND NOT A REFOUND AS YOU SAID). I just suggest to these people if they want to run a business, to care more about their costumers, and accept the critics specially when is from people who know better than them about food, and specially when they use fake advertsing to trap people in their nets. P.S, i suggest you to change the name of the plate as Jalapenos...
Read moreWent on Friday night and asked for a table for 4. The staff member looked around and said to sit wherever. There was nowhere to sit! We joined a bench with another customer and then managed to get a table as people were leaving. We were with our 17 and 18 year old boys and straight away were told they had to be out by 8pm. So thus far, there hadn't been any friendly or helpful service at all! Ordered the nachos, obviously what we were there for, and were so disappointed. Yes, they look pretty impressive, and yes there is a lot, but taste wise they don't live up to the claims. There are tonnes of jalapeños, not much cheese, the soured cream had a funny texture to it and the chilli was really dry. I get that it may have to be to construct this dish, but this wasn't the plate of joy we hoped it was going to be. Waited almost 20 minutes for one dessert (that never came) while being told the kitchen was small, they were busy and only had two chefs. We could see right into the kitchen and they were making up plates of food and taking photos! This wasn't worth the journey or value for money. We weren't made to feel welcome at any point, the food was disappointing and the service was extremely poor. We could also comment on the smell, steak sandwich and sweltering temperature in the place... If you have to go out your way to go here, which we did, we wouldn't...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThis is a remarkably comfortable, student pub, even if you're not a student anymore. The atmosphere is very relaxed and friendly, even when it's busy, and the same adjectives apply to the staff, who are basically just lovely.
While it may not exactly be a craft beer or real ale cornucopia, I'd be surprised if you couldn't find something that you properly liked, even if you are a bit fussy about your beer; I am, and I've always been happy. There's a handful of rotating cask ales, backed up by a decent spread of beers on keg, and a reasonable selection of craft beer in bottles.
The food options lean mostly in the direction of comfort, but there are some good healthy options among them, and a reasonable set of vegetarian, vegan and gluten free choices with a mexican-ish theme. Almost all of the food I've had would suffice to keep you full for at least a day - I highly recommend the vegan burrito. Surprisingly, they make pretty good coffee for a pub.
Last but not least there is a small selection of boards games, and many people's seem to bring and play their own.
N.B. This is a four star review only because I reserve five stars for the sort of pub that I would head to if the world was about to end; the Auld Hoose may not quite be that, but I'd happily stop off here for a sneaky half...
