While our expectations were initially high due to the impressive Google reviews, our experience at this restaurant unfortunately fell short. It's important to note that the establishment is small and can feel congested, which may not be ideal for everyone.

Regrettably, the food did not live up to our expectations of authentic Indian cuisine. Both the Lamb Rogan josh and Garlic naan left much to be desired in terms of taste and quality. The Lamb and Prawn Biriyani lacked the fine texture and robust flavors we've come to expect from similar dishes at other Indian restaurants in the UK.

Additionally, the Chapati we ordered was undercooked, which was disappointing. Service was also lacking, as there was a considerable delay in receiving our food. It seemed that the staff were more focused on fulfilling take-away orders rather than attending to in-restaurant customers, which was frustrating.

On a positive note, the staff members were polite, accommodating, and friendly throughout our visit.

Overall, we left feeling disappointed, especially considering the restaurant's high number of reviews and overall rating on Google. While others may not mind the deviation from traditional Indian flavours, those seeking an authentic experience may want to explore other...

A Hidden Gem for Indian Cuisine!

I recently had the pleasure of dining at [Restaurant Name], and I have to say, it was an unforgettable experience. From the moment I walked in, the ambiance was warm and inviting, with a perfect blend of traditional and modern touches. The staff were friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home.

The food was nothing short of spectacular, and packed with flavorful filling. For the main course, I highly recommend the butter chicken—it was rich, creamy, and absolutely delicious. The flavors were well-balanced, and the spices were just right, not overwhelming but still packing a punch. The naan was perfectly soft and freshly baked, complementing the dishes beautifully.

What stood out to me the most, however, was the attention to detail in each dish. Everything was fresh, and the ingredients tasted high-quality. It’s clear that the chefs at [Restaurant Name] are passionate about their craft.

Overall, [Restaurant Name] offers an exceptional dining experience with authentic flavors and top-notch service. Whether you're a long-time fan of Indian cuisine or new to the flavors, this place is a must-try. I'll...

Surprised, in the best way!

Maharani has been my favourite Indian restaurant in Colchester for well over a decade, but, since changing to a vegan diet in 2019, it has been difficult to find lots of options to eat (often limited to a small amount of dishes)...until last night!!

It has been six years since I had a real, restaurant-made, tikka masala sauce and last night this longing and emptiness was filled. And boy was it as delicious as ever!!

The food here has always been exceptional and now Maharani boasts an entire vegan menu, complete with multiple options for all courses. Absolute heaven. Even items traditionally cooked in butter/ghee (bhindi bhaji (okra)), they were happy to substitute and make a vegan version.

The vegan tikka masala sauce was so good I ordered an extra portion to take home.

Beautiful restaurant with amazing, friendly and attentive staff who know what they're doing and are an absolute delight. The atmosphere is so friendly and warm and, as stated, tye food is exceptional; so delicious, flavourful, make with care and the best ingredients.

I can't...

I came to Maharani restaurant with my wife for an evening meal after recommendation from friends. We both had an amazing time. The atmosphere was fabulous, and the restaurant was elegantly themed to a royal indian restaurant but yet still modern with the social media vibes for the younger generation to snap one or two Instagram pictures. The dishes we tried from the menu were delicious, and the staff was attentive to our dietary requirements and provided an excellent friendly service. The staff who were in front of the house were all very jolly and made the dining experience more enjoyable. I just wanted to say thank you to all the staff. The quality of the service and food was excellent. I also liked how you cater for vegetarians and adapted the menu with no fuss to meet our needs. It's nice to know there are such places local in Colchester. We will definitely be coming back again, and I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking to dine out in an elegant place, with excellent food and service.

I’ve had chicken tikka biriyani and chargrilled chicken last week from this restaurant. I was going here for the first time, so I wasn’t aware of pre-booking to dine in. The staff was well behaved and offered us a table for few hours, which was actually enough 😇. Chicken Tikka Biriyani was so heavenly 🫶 awakened my taste buds after so long, to be honest. It was spicy like how i asked them to prepare, served with raitha. The biriyani costs around £12 - £13, but the taste was worth the money! The chargrilled chicken was on point with hot sauce and costs around £4.50 - £5, with a good portion of medium spicy chicken. Do recommend a visit to all the biriyani lovers (mention them if you want it more spicy or not)

Awesome first visit this beautiful and stylish restaurant, the food was very very good and I've visited India a few time and know when it's good. Also impressed that at the end of the meal I got chatting with SIB Muskan, who on learning we were out to celebrate my birthday brought back a box of chocolates and a birthday card offering me a shot to finish the meal ...really unexpected , I should have known from the beautifully logged plates and intricate folded napkins that it was going to be a lovely night out with great service . Totally recommend checking them out, Ray Hayden Brightlingsea.
