Stopped here after visiting the castle, it was Sunday and me and my girlfriend were fancying a Sunday Roast! So we entered this pub that is just by the entrance of the castle park, I think recently refurbished, nice outside area, nice decor inside too, really minimal though but with some nice finiture. (only 2 bad things I can say, it was a bit too cold in there and place looked a bit too empty, in terms of furniture or shelves or painting around, but not a big deal) Anyway waiting staff was great had that attention towards the customer that rarely you find in a pub. We felt very looked after!
The Sunday road was superb! My girlfriend had the beef one and me the chicken. Huge portion! My girlfriend left nearly half of it. But the quality was very good! Finally a chef that seasons all the bits properly. Also the gravy was nice and smooth! Delicious! Lots of places serves the Sunday roast very quick, here it took a little longer, around 15/20 mins, but I told my girlfriend, this is a good sign, it means that chef is dedicated in preparing it nicely rather that just throwing it in a plate, and I wasn't disappointed! In fact I wanted to let chef know of my appreciation and I tipped him.
Definitely recommended, and if I will ever visit Colchester again I will go straight there. Thank you to...
Read moreWe visited early on a Saturday night. We were looking for somewhere to have a drink and an evening meal with our 12 year old. We had wandered up and down the high street and couldn't find anything to suit us. Then we happened upon the Castle Inn. Atmosphere was lovely. Not to noisy. But comfortably busy. We ordered the Meat platter for 3 of us to share. The food and the staff were excellent. One of the best meals out we've had for as long as we can remember. Great potions of really well cooked food and topped off by a great price and really helpful and friendly staff. We may never visit Colchester again. But if we do we will be stopping here. Great work from everyone here from bar staff to kitchen. Loved...
Read moreIt's a pub, nice as any other I suppose, but then the quality of pubs in the UK is rapidly deteriorating and I think it's necessary to hold them to account.
£6 for a pint is a London price, and it may be acceptable if the rest of the experience was worth it, but you still have to order at the bar, and the food is decent but nothing to write home about, again, especially for the price.
Colchester is a tourism hub and I'd expect to see better quality at this price point right next to the castle, either that or a reduction in price.
Aside from this, the staff were very friendly, the place was clean, and the furniture comfortable. + pet...
