We booked a Superior room at The Sheep on Sheep Street. The front of the building set on the main street in Stow looks charming and attractive, you have to access the property at the back. Check in time is 3pm, and ufortunately the car park itself is extremely small and woefully inadequate for the size of accommodation that has been added on, there is NO designated parking for hotel guests, and the small parking area is shared with pub users/restaurant users/locals and staff, this means that by the time you are able to book in there is literally nowhere left to park, which rmakes for a rather stressful experience, particularly for those who have booked in for a slightly longer stay with suitcases etc to unload, or anyone with limited mobility.||We had booked a 5 night stay, and because l currently have a temporary mobility issue we realised there was going to be an issue with parking at the accommodation (the website states the car park is small) so l contacted them ahead of our stay explaining this would be problematic, to avoid any issues they said they would cone off a parking space in the car park for us, however when we arrived it was extremely difficult to navigate through the tiny area to get to it, and we almost damaged our car in the process, we also had the stress of wondering whether or not we would be able to actually get out of the car park the next day.||When we casually mentioned how tight it was to get through the car park, the person booking us in made a huge point of saying that they had gone out of their way to get us that space, and it was not something they normally do, we were made to feel it was a privilege that they had actually provided some parking for our 5 day stay and we felt quite uncomfortable, we had already thanked them for this a few times. We found this situation surprising and dissapointing, as surely when you book a room for 5 nights you expect some form of parking to be provided as standard.||To our surprise the day after our arrival the traffic cones reserving us a space were suddenly removed and another car was parked there, but because of the very real possibility of damaging our car trying to access the space we didn't question this, and instead we had to pick up/drop off and search every day for a parking space somewhere in the streets behind the building which was stressful and really not acceptable.||The room itself was spacious and nicely finished, and effort had been made on the interior choices, it felt a bit dark but overall it was pleasant, the outdoor patio area was a nice addition but felt a bit unloved with dead leaves/rubbish on the floor.||Unfortunately there were cleaning issues in our room and elsewhere in the hotel. When we opened the wardrobe to unpack we saw the mirror was very obviously dirty and covered in fingerprints (see pic) In addition, when we opened the clear tea caddy lid, it was also covered in grubby finger print marks (see pic). When we tried to report this to reception the phone was picked up and we could hear voices in the background but nobody spoke, this hapoened 3 times which was very odd and unhelpful. Eventually, we had to walk back down to reception to report the issues, we gave our room number and a gentleman said he would deal with it. In addition, I put my brand new bag under the dressing table, and when l went to pick it up next day it came out covered in dust( see pic). Sadly the cleaning issues were not dealt with as promised and the dirty areas were not cleaned throughout our 5 day stay, despite the fact the cleaner actually came in on one occasion to clean the room, obviously it did make us wonder what else hadn't been cleaned properly, and sure enough when we went for dinner on the first night in the restaurant, the wall divider panelling was absolutely filthy (see pic) which put us off eating here sadly, we did report this to a waitress and to a manager who agreed it wasn't acceptable, but the attitude seemed very laid back, and once again this wwasn't dealt with for our entire 5 day stay. The next day at breakfast we saw the back of the seating in one area appeared to be grubby and stained (see pic).||We found the dirty areas in the restaurant off putting so we only ate there for breakfast as we'd already paid for that each day We had to go out every evening for dinner which was a shame and a bit inconvenient as we had planned to use the restaurant some nights. The food we did eat in the restaurant was okay and my partner enjoyed his full english breakfast each morning.||There were minor inconsistencies with both service and food offering eg one day at breakfast my partner was asked if he would like black pudding with the full english breakfast, but on the other 4 days not asked, one day given half a mushroom, another day 2 whole mushrooms, one day 3 mini potato hash browns, the next day 7. We also found some staff attitudes not great but others good. These were minor things, but added up to a general feeling of inconsistency.||Obviously The Sheep is in a great location which makes it popular, it's nicely decorated, and the outdoor space/garden is attractive and well designed with a little horse box offering food, and nice seating areas, there apoear to be quite a few locals in the pub/restaurant, and we noticed the atmosphere is quite lively there in the evening.||In conclusion, l wanted to love our stay at The Sheep, but for us it was effected negatively by the issues we encountered which was sad and...
Read moreReally disappointing experience. My sister had a gift card for her birthday and decided to use it somewhere out of our hometown as a treat for Sunday lunch and so we decided on the The Sheep which is a 50 minute drive for us. We said we would go all out and treat ourselves to A Sunday Roast and a dessert and we're very much looking forward to well deserved day out.
A young guy took our drinks order who was welcoming and friendly. He also took our food order. Whilst waiting for our food, there were two tables close by where the chef had made an error on their orders, where the tables ended up with one and others orders and not brought out how the customer had requested when ordering. One of the tables were a little abrupt to the staff which was unnecessary as it wasn't actually their fault and they had apologised and tried to rectify it. However the customers actions seems to create a domino effect on the staff who then became extremely rude and sarcastic to other customers including us.
When our mains were brought we asked for some water for the table. The girl huffed and replied yepp! (Like it was a huge inconvenience) When the girl brought the water to the table we both said thank you and her reply was that's okay but again very sarcastic and like we had been a huge inconvenience to her.
We both ordered a Sunday roast. One lamb and one Beef. The beef had so my fat on it which was little off-putting and the yorkshire pudding was very hard.
During that time we had no check back to ask how our meal was or if we needed anything We also had to wait 20 minutes for our plates to be cleared after we had finished, and wasn't asked how our meal was.
Due to the experience we were getting We decided not to get a dessert
and would drive elsewhere for one.
We waited another 10 minutes and managed to get the guy who took our plates attention We politely asked him for the bill who again made it out like we were being a pain for him. We explained we had a gift card to use towards the payment (which we had also made a note of when making the booking) he rolled his eyes and told us we would have to go to the bar to do this. We were then told by four different members of staff how they didn't know how to process a gift card and had never seen one before and would get the manager.
We really weren't looking forward to the manager coming down to help as based on how the staff had been throughout our time there we were expecting him to be the same. To our surprise he was friendly and processed the gift card straight away. He was also the only person that asked how our meal was. We did mention the beef which he said he would speak to the supplier.
Overall a very disappointing experience and also a waste of money, especially when we had chosen this venue over others based on the...
Read moreOn the 28th of January, my partner and I visited The Sheep on Sheep Street in Stow-on-the-Wold, lured in by the charming venue and an enticing menu. Unfortunately, what followed was one of the most disappointing meals we’ve ever had the misfortune of paying for. To start, we ordered the cheese soufflé, which arrived frozen in the middle. At £10 for a starter, one would expect a freshly prepared dish, not something that tasted like it had been hastily defrosted. This was a poor beginning to what only got worse. For the main course, my partner had the salmon in tomato sauce, while I opted for the lamb shank. The salmon was an absolute letdown – the sauce was watery and devoid of any flavour, and the fish itself was completely unseasoned. As for the lamb shank, it was mediocre at best, lacking the depth of flavour and tenderness one would expect from a dish at this price point. By this stage, we were so disheartened by the quality of the food that we decided against ordering dessert. We simply couldn’t face any further disappointments. What truly compounded our disappointment was the lack of accountability from the restaurant. After such a subpar experience, I reached out to both the Honeycomb Group and the general manager of The Sheep to express my concerns about the exorbitant prices for the poor quality of food we were served. To date, I have received no response, which speaks volumes about the level of care (or lack thereof) from management. The staff who served us seemed almost embarrassed but unsurprised when we returned our dishes, which makes me wonder if this is a regular occurrence. If so, it’s a shame that such a beautiful venue is let down by such careless standards in the kitchen and management. In summary, if you’re looking for a nice spot for a drink, The Sheep might suffice. But if you’re after a decent meal, I would strongly advise you to look elsewhere. Overpriced, underwhelming, and utterly forgettable – save your money and...
