Was really looking forward to staying in this well reviewed pub but found the experience very disappointing. Arrived and was shown to our room which we found dark. The bar lady told us how to put the TV on (helpful) but not the lights - could not figure out why the bedside light would not switch on - the switch was behind the bed and had not been plugged in! ||Went to make a hot drink and found the kettle unusable - full of limescale. It had not been cleaned in a long-time. That set the tone for our stay - the sofa had marks on it, the floor was covered in dust,(where the bed had been split into twin beds) as were the bedside lamps and the tray in which the cups and water were left was dirty. No other word for it. The shower screen wasn't cleaned properly either. The housekeeping was poor. It was obvious that nobody had run a final check on our room before showing us in.||Given what we were paying, I felt it was expensive for what we received. I had to ask the staff to fix the light and clean the kettle, which was done that afternoon, but when you're paying £170 for the night, you don't expect to have to ask!! We didn't point out the dust - the chap sorting out the light would have seen it.||We stayed in a ground floor room and the noise from the room above was terrible - I suspect there is no carpet/rug on the floor so we could hear everything! We also had outside tables right outside the room with people sitting and enjoying a drink - this could be irritating if you were looking for an early, quiet night - especially in the summer.||The beds were comfortable but the heating went off in the room by early evening, making the room cool but as the bathroom was warm, we kept the door to the bathroom open to heat the room.||The breakfast was ok - no extras through. Cheap orange juice, cheap yogurts and no pot of coffee on the table. Staff were helpful and cheerful but it was hard to work out who, if anyone, is in charge. Somebody needs to take a grip of the place and run it before standards drop further. Attention to detail is missing.||Overall, a dismal 3 star experience for a 4+ star price and on that basis, we...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI stayed at the Royal Oak for two nights, and was thoroughly impressed. I had dinner the first night at the Royal Oak, a vegan sweet potato curry with rice and a nan bread. It was hot - very hot! It was also delicious, and I thoroughly enjoyed every mouthful. The cider was cool and refreshing, and it was nice to see customers with their dogs inside and outside of the pub.||The room was in a separate building about 10 feet from the pub door and was comfy, cosy and absolutely spotless, and on the ground floor. The only thing missing was a wardrobe, but as it was a short stay on business only a minor annoyance. The bathroom was small and well laid out, though I did find that the shower cubicle leaked a bit after I used it! The shower was lovely - great pressure and temperature after a little adjusting. ||Night time was not completely undisturbed, as there was still a few people about after lights out, but once again nothing but a minor niggle. Comfy bed, nice and big. Kettle and the tea was very nice, TV worked well and the Wi-Fi speed was good and strong so I could watch iPlayer happily on my laptop without issue. ||I have the vegan breakfast both mornings, and it was lovely. Big mushrooms, veggie sausages, beans and toast was delicious. The member of staff remembered my order the second day, which was nice. ||Parking is at the back of the pub, and is spacious with lots of room. If you have mobility issue there is a slight rise to the pub but it's short and slight.||I will be back in the area again so will definitely choose...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThis is a review of eating at the Royal Oak. One of the eternal flaws of Google is that everywhere has to be a restaurant OR a hotel. So the categories are often messed up. The Royal Oak is a dog-friendly, attractive old-style pub. It is a place for having a drink, meeting people, chatting and it still feels like a pub. Too many "pubs" are now 99% dining with 6 square inches of pub. The Royal Oak is definitely a pub where you can eat a decent meal. There's a good choice of beers and wines. We found the menu too limited in choice. Now this is often a good sign in a restaurant because when you have 450 things off a laminated, wipe-down menu with photos of a chicken kiev, it's never going to be good. A limited menu suggests they are focusing on the food they are preparing. But the Royal Oak's menu was just too limited - just two starters and around five main courses, of which three were burgers (of sorts) and a risotto (really not great)' fish and chips (IIRC) and a cheese and pasta dish. It wasn't an interesting menu. The food quality was mixed - the cheeseburger and chicken burger were excellent, but the risotto was bland. Kitchen needs a shakeup, really. Clearly they are good cooks: let them show it! The serving staff and manager were fantastic: smiling, friendly, cheerful, kind and helpful and there was a strong sense that this is a genuinely friendly, welcoming place. This is extremely highly recommended for an afternoon or evening of drinking or chatting - and we will definitely be back - but the food offering needs to...
