I originally gave 3 stars but in response to the owner's reply I've reduced the rating to 1 star. Yes we drank water because my wife can't drink and I barely drink, and I happened to be thirsty. We asked whether you did a discount because our B&B said some pubs in the area give discounts to guests. If this offends you then sorry, that's on you, not me. I'm hindsight I should have asked for a discount on the basis that the food was so bad. I'm so disappointed in the chips with my steak and ale pie, I went here hoping for some good pub grub, but instead I strongly suspect that I was served supermarket-brand steak cut oven chips (and the standard stuff at that, not the good lines of supermarket brand stuff). How difficult is it to chip some potatoes? The pie itself was ok, tasty enough, but not a lot of steak in it. Pastry was nice and the "proper gravy" (so called by the menu) was fine too, just a shame that it wasn't served with proper chips. My wife enjoyed her curry, I tried a bit and thought it tasted cheap, but her enjoying it had bought this review an extra star before the owner's response to my review. My original review also said "Also buying this review an extra star was the staff, who were welcoming and pleasant." but the staff have since shown their true colours with the unpleasantness you see in their response.

Stellar spot in Matlock for home-cooked vittles and finely drawn ales. True Northern British hospitality, they welcomed in my little American family with warmth, making us feel right at home. Everything a pub, inn, & restaurant could aspire to; I was proud of the chance to show my girls the finer points of British pub-culture with this cozy den! Andrew proved attentive and charming as he secured us dining and drafts even at an hour well past the kitchen’s retirement. Can’t say enough about this place. If you’re in Matlock, join the locals for pints, grub, & laughs forgetting your troubles for a time among the beautiful rolling hills of the district!

Popped into this pub for a couple of hours on a Friday evening when staying in Matlock for the weekend. Absolutely loved the place, the landlord and landlady were friendly, very accommodating to our little dog, and offered us a seat by the fire when the pub quitened down, which was a nice touch. Great beers and a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. It was just a shame we could only visit once.

So pleased that I Googled this place. My family and I were staying just a 5 minute walk away and phoned ahead to book a table. We were greeted by a lovely warm welcome from the owners who apologised for a small menu due to awaiting a delivery. There was still plenty for us all to choose from and all freshly cooked home made food. Great food and amazingly friendly service. I had a pint of Ghost ship whilst we waited and it was so nice I had to have another ( just to make sure of course ) We all had starters and a main course which were all great portion sizes. We all left with full tummies and so happy that we found the place. If you get a chance go and try it, don’t just read this review and think oh that sounds nice. If we are in the area again we will definitely return. Thank you very much to The Sycamore Inn you certainly know how to run a pub and my wife, daughter and I were happy to...
